A systematic review of the literature on screening for exercise-induced asthma: considerations for school nurses.

Asthma is a major cause of illness, missed school days, and hospitalization in children. One type of asthma common in children is exercise-induced asthma (EIA). EIA causes airway narrowing with symptoms of cough and shortness of breath during exercise.

Respiratory viruses in children with cystic fibrosis: viral detection and clinical findings.

Background: Viral detection from different respiratory sample types in children with cystic fibrosis (CF) is facilitated by available molecular methods, but optimum sampling strategies have not been identified. In addition, associations between viral detection and respiratory symptoms are not well described.

Objectives: Study goals were to compare molecular detection of viruses from concurrent upper airway and sputum samples in children with CF and to describe relative frequency of respiratory viral infections and identify potential clinical associations.

Changes in cystic fibrosis sputum microbiology in the United States between 1995 and 2008.

Study Objectives: The study objective was to identify changes in cystic fibrosis (CF) sputum microbiology over 13 years.

Methods: This study recruited a contemporary cohort of CF patients meeting similar eligibility criteria as the 520 subjects in the Phase 3 trials of inhaled tobramycin (historical cohort). Subjects submitted a single sputum specimen to a centralized laboratory for culture and susceptibility testing.

Randomized trial of brief office-based interventions to reduce adolescent alcohol use.

Objective: To determine whether office-based interventions change adolescents' alcohol beliefs and alcohol use.

Design: Randomized, controlled trial.

Setting: Five managed care group practices in Washington, DC.
