Ribosomal DNA sequences are currently available for 32 morphologically recognized species of Dactylogyrus parasitizing Nearctic cypriniforms, but only 16 of them are assigned to nominal species. Herein, morphological data on 28 of the 32 species are provided, together with comments on their phylogenetic relationships in the context of the morphology of taxonomically important structures. Seven new species of Dactylogyrus are described from five species of leuciscids and one species of catostomids, as follows: D.

Article Synopsis
  • The Apennine Peninsula has a lower number of unique cyprinoid species compared to other southern European peninsulas, but non-native species have recently increased overall freshwater diversity.
  • Recent research identified a variety of helminth parasites in endemic cyprinoid fish, discovering four new species of Dactylogyrus, which are specific gill parasites.
  • The identified Dactylogyrus species are unique to the Apennine Peninsula, yet they share a historical link with similar parasites from the Balkans, indicating a previous connection between these regions.

Cypriniformes, which exhibit a wide geographical distribution, are the most species-rich group of freshwater fishes. Despite considerable research on their parasites, no reliable estimates of their parasite diversity on a large geographical scale are available. In the present review, we analyse species richness of two parasitic flatworm groups (monogeneans and tapeworms) reported from cypriniform fishes in the two most intensively studied parts of the Holarctic region, Europe and North America.

Background: African catfishes of the families Bagridae and Clariidae are known to be parasitized with monogeneans of Quadriacanthus Paperna, 1961 (Dactylogyridae). The genus remains taxonomically challenging due to its speciose nature and relatively wide host range representing two fish orders, i.e.

Statement Of Problem: A valid system for assessing and classifying functional occlusion has not been established. The prevalence of anterior protected articulation is not known.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to quantify the prevalence of various functional occlusal contact patterns, including anterior protected articulation, among dental students.
