The aim was to explore possible correlations between the oral status of patients undergoing treatment at a special outpatient psychiatric clinic for eating disorders and such variables as psychiatric diagnosis and duration of illness, oral hygiene habits, salivary function, and dietary habits. Healthy volunteers of a similar age were recruited for comparison. The material comprised 100 consecutive referrals, of whom 79 were women and 2 were men (age range 17 to 47, median 25 yr) participated.

The death rate for persons in Stockholm born in 1905 has been investigated during a 9-year period (1971-1979). In 1971 these persons were invited to participate in a health check-up. Another check-up was carried out 3 years later, during which a psychiatric examination of 589 persons was undertaken.

A psychiatric study has been carried out on a group of 72-year-olds. They were selected at random among the 2,878 persons born in 1905 and resident in the municipality of Stockholm who failed to appear for a general health checkup 6 years earlier. Among the 86 persons who could be evaluated of the 104 originally selected, 53 were found to be without psychiatric symptoms.

In a follow-up health control of 69-year-old persons in Stockholm, 589 were examined psychiatrically. Of these, 462 persons had responded affirmatively to symptoms indicating a depressive syndrome. Neurotic disorders were judged to be present in 258 persons, sleeping disturbances in 81, other types of psychiatric disorders in 10 whereas 113 persons were judged to be without psychiatric symptoms.
