Characterizing deep subsurface microbial communities informs our understanding of Earth's biogeochemistry as well as the search for life beyond the Earth. Here we characterized microbial communities within the Kidd Creek Observatory subsurface fracture water system with mean residence times of hundreds of millions to over one billion years. 16S rRNA analysis revealed that biosamplers well isolated from the mine environment were dominated by a putatively anaerobic and halophilic bacterial species from the family, Frackibacter.

Light chain escape (LCE) is a clinical phenomenon observed when light chains rise separately from M-spike values, implying divergent tumor evolution. We sought to understand LCE by performing high depth transcriptomic and phenotypic studies.

We have identified an epoch in the neonatal rat brain defined by a transient population of peri-hippocampal mast cells (phMCs) that are abundant from birth through 2-weeks post-natal but absent thereafter. The phMCs are maintained by proliferation and harbor a unique transcriptome compared with mast cells residing in the skin, bone marrow, or other brain regions.

However, few studies have examined the association of prognostic communication with symptoms, mood, and health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in this population.
Methods: In this cross-sectional study of 218 outpatients with DC, we assessed their self-reported health status (terminally ill vs not terminally ill), their prognostic communication with their hepatologists (Prognosis and Treatment Preferences Questionnaire), symptom burden (Revised Edmonton Symptom Assessment Scale), psychological distress (Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale), and HRQOL (Short-Form Liver Disease Quality of Life scale).
