Centrosomes play an important role in the microtubule organization of a cell. The sperm's specialized centrosome consists of the canonical barrel-shaped proximal centriole, the funnel-shaped distal centriole, and the pericentriolar material known as striated columns (or segmented columns). Here, we examined the localization of the centriole proteins CEP135 and CP110 in cattle and human spermatozoa.

The discovery of noncoding RNAs (ncRNAs) and their importance for gene regulation led us to develop bioinformatics tools to pursue the discovery of novel ncRNAs. Finding ncRNAs de novo is challenging, first due to the difficulty of retrieving large numbers of sequences for given gene activities, and second due to exponential demands on calculation needed for comparative genomics on a large scale. Recently, several tools for the prediction of conserved RNA secondary structure were developed, but many of them are not designed to uncover new ncRNAs, or are too slow for conducting analyses on a large scale.

Treatment of shigellosis with cefixime: two days vs. five days.

Background: Although the recommended standard course of therapy for shigellosis is 5 days of oral ampicillin or trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole therapy, successful outcome has been reported in adults treated with abbreviated courses of antibiotics. The purpose of this study was to compare short course (2-day) vs. 5-day therapy with cefixime for treatment of diarrheal disease caused by Shigella sonnei in children.
