Arctic warming is causing ancient perennially frozen ground (permafrost) to thaw, resulting in ground collapse, and reshaping of landscapes. This threatens Arctic peoples' infrastructure, cultural sites, and land-based natural resources. Terrestrial permafrost thaw and ongoing intensification of hydrological cycles also enhance the amount and alter the type of organic carbon (OC) delivered from land to Arctic nearshore environments.

Background: Big data tools provide opportunities to monitor adverse events (patient harm associated with medical care) (AEs) in the unstructured text of electronic health care records (EHRs). Writers may explicitly state an apparent association between treatment and adverse outcome ("attributed") or state the simple treatment and outcome without an association ("unattributed"). Many methods for finding AEs in text rely on predefining possible AEs before searching for prespecified words and phrases or manual labeling (standardization) by investigators.

Contaminants alter the quantity and quality of insect prey available to terrestrial insectivores. In agricultural regions, the quantity of aquatic insects emerging from freshwaters can be impacted by insecticides originating from surrounding croplands. We hypothesized that, in such regions, adult aquatic insects could also act as vectors of pesticide transfer to terrestrial food webs.

Organic nitrogen (N) is abundant in soils, but early conceptual frameworks considered it nonessential for plant growth. It is now well recognised that plants have the potential to take up organic N. However, it is still unclear whether plants supplement their N requirements by taking up organic N in situ: at what rate is organic N diffusing towards roots and are plants taking it up? We combined microdialysis with live-root uptake experiments to measure amino acid speciation and diffusion rates towards roots of Eriophorum vaginatum.

Objectives: Pediatric Early Warning Scores (PEWS) are an easy-to-use diagnostic tool for patient evaluation. The goal of this study was to determine if using PEWS in our pediatric emergency department (PED) at the time of admission to the hospital was associated with a decrease in the number of emergency response calls within 6 hours of admission.

Methods: A retrospective chart review of 6 months before (May 2013-October 2013) and after (December 2013-May 2014) initiation of PEWS upon inpatient admission from our urban, tertiary care PED was conducted to determine the number of patients who had emergency response calls within 6 hours of admission.
