Freshwater ecosystems are highly biodiverse and important for livelihoods and economic development, but are under substantial stress. To date, comprehensive global assessments of extinction risk have not included any speciose groups primarily living in freshwaters. Consequently, data from predominantly terrestrial tetrapods are used to guide environmental policy and conservation prioritization, whereas recent proposals for target setting in freshwaters use abiotic factors.

Background: Seizures, including status epilepticus (SE), are common in anti-NMDA receptor encephalitis (NMDARE). We aimed to describe clinical and electrographic features of patients with seizures with NMDARE, determine factors associated with SE, and describe long-term seizure outcomes.

Methods: We retrospectively identified patients with seizures in the setting of NMDARE treated at inpatient Mayo Clinic sites during the acute phase of encephalitis between October 2008 and March 2023.

Context: Vascular access malfunction and failure contribute to morbidity and hospitalization in hemodialysis populations. Although controversy still exists over the identification and appropriate management of access malfunction, recognition of sentinel signs during physical examination remains an efficient way to screen for access malfunction. Dialysis staff are on the front line of providing quality care to dialysis patients, often being the first ones who could detect early physical signs of access malfunction.
