International development organisations have improved billions of human lives in the Global South. However, in both their projects and advice to governments, most of these organisations neglect animal welfare. This blindspot matters.

Article Synopsis
  • Researchers studied the role of PKD3, a member of the Protein kinases D family, in T cell responses, particularly how it differs from the better-understood PKD2.
  • Using a mouse model that overexpresses PKD3 in T cells, they found an increase in central memory T cells, though this was not fully explained by lab tests and seemed tied to developmental changes during thymic development.
  • Ultimately, they concluded that PKD3 plays a subtle role in shaping the development of central memory and CD8 T cells, but it doesn't significantly affect overall immune responses in specific tests.

Accurately identifying life-threatening prostate cancer (PCa) at time of diagnosis remains an unsolved problem. We evaluated whether DNA methylation status of selected candidate genes can predict the risk of metastasis beyond clinical risk factors in men with untreated PCa. A nested case-control study was conducted among men diagnosed with localized PCa at Kaiser Permanente California between 01/01/1997-12/31/2006 who did not receive curative treatments.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how tobacco exposure impacts health differently across various racial and ethnic groups, focusing on the internal nicotine dose as a key factor in carcinogen uptake.
  • Researchers conducted an epigenome-wide association study (EWAS) using blood samples to examine the relationship between urinary total nicotine equivalents (TNEs) and DNA methylation patterns in nearly 2,000 individuals from the Multiethnic Cohort Study.
  • The findings revealed 408 significant changes in DNA methylation associated with TNEs, identifying novel genetic sites linked to smoking, with variations noted among different racial and ethnic groups, indicating a complex relationship between nicotine exposure and health outcomes.
