The opioid crisis continues to escalate, disproportionately affecting women of reproductive age. Traditionally the first line of treatment for pregnant women with opioid use disorder is the mu-opioid receptor agonist methadone. Humans and animals use information about future access to rewards to influence their behaviour in the present, however the evidence for this is largely anecdotal. Here we use the nicotine intravenous self-administration paradigm to ask whether rats can use an auditory stimulus signalling a long (450 s) signalled time-out on the next trial to influence their nicotine intake in the present. Rats were trained to choose between low (15 µg/kg/infusion), medium (30 µg/kg/infusion) or high (60 µg/kg/infusion) doses of nicotine on any given trial.

Article Synopsis
  • Disparities exist in mental health care access based on socioeconomic factors, particularly regarding the use of esketamine nasal spray for treatment-resistant depression (TRD).
  • The study analyzed two cohorts: one with commercial or Medicare Advantage insurance and another with Medicaid, examining time to esketamine initiation over a six-year period.
  • Results showed that lower education levels and household income significantly reduced the likelihood of starting esketamine therapy, with females also facing lower initiation rates across both cohorts.

Neuronal growth regulator 1 (NEGR1) is a synaptic plasma membrane localized cell adhesion molecule implicated in a wide spectrum of psychiatric disorders. By RNAseq analysis of the transcriptomic changes in the brain of NEGR1-deficient mice, we found that NEGR1 deficiency affects the expression of the Gad2 gene. We show that glutamic acid decarboxylase 65 (GAD65), the Gad2 - encoded enzyme synthesizing the inhibitory neurotransmitter GABA on synaptic vesicles, accumulates non-synaptically in brains of NEGR1-deficient mice.
