Survivin is known for its dual biological role in apoptosis inhibition and mitotic progression. In addition to its being part of the chromosomal passenger complex (CPC), recent findings suggest additional roles for Survivin in the DNA damage response, further contributing to therapy resistance. In this study, we investigated the role of Survivin and the CPC proteins in the cellular response to irradiation with a focus on DNA replication processes.

Genomic prediction has been established in breeding programs to predict the genotypic values of selection candidates without phenotypic data. First results in wheat showed that genomic predictions can also prove useful to select among material for which phenotypic data are available. In such a scenario, the selection candidates are evaluated with low intensity in the field.

Introduction: Overall survival of high-risk neuroblastoma patients is still poor, emphasizing the need for novel therapeutic options. There is evidence for anti-cancer properties of the herbal substances thymoquinone and curcumin. These substances are isolated from Nigella sativa L.

Local drug delivery systems (DDS) have become a favourable approach for the treatment of numerous diseases. Biomedical imaging techniques such as ultrahigh field magnetic resonance imaging (UHF-MRI) offer unique insight into DDS biodegradation in vivo. We describe the establishment of a 7 Tesla MRI routine for longitudinal in vivo examinations of a subconjunctival DDS for the treatment of glaucoma in a rabbit model.

Within this paper we analyzed the technical feasibility of a novel microstent for glaucoma therapy. For lowering of intraocular pressure, the flexible polyurethane (PUR) implant is designed to drain aqueous humour from the anterior chamber of the eye into subconjunctival, or alternatively suprachoroidal, space. The microstent includes a biodegradable, flow resisting polymer membrane serving as temporary flow resistance for the prevention of early postoperative hypotony.
