Article Synopsis
  • - T-cell receptor (TCR) activation leads to increased calcium (Ca) uptake in mitochondria of human CD4 T-cells, which is critical for T-cell activation and energy production.
  • - Effector T-cells show higher levels of Ca and enhanced metabolic activity compared to naive T-cells, influenced by the mitochondrial calcium uniporter (MCU) complex.
  • - Reducing MCUa function decreases Ca uptake, mitochondrial respiration, and important T-cell activities like migration and cytokine secretion, suggesting that MCU inhibition could help manage autoimmune diseases.

Objective: Young Latinas and Black women drink less than women of other racial/ethnic groups but experience more alcohol-related problems in midlife. This study aims to identify modifiable factors to prevent adult onset of alcohol use disorder (AUD) in this population.

Methods: Data were collected at six time points as part of the Harlem Longitudinal Development Study from 365 Latinas (47%) and Black (53%) women (mean age at time 1 = 14, standard deviation 1.

Article Synopsis
  • Kaposiform hemangioendothelioma (KHE) and tufted angioma (TA) are rare vascular tumors in children, and this study aimed to identify effective first-line therapies due to the lack of clinical trials.
  • The study included 159 patients, revealing high treatment response rates (>70%) to both sirolimus and vincristine, with no significant differences in effectiveness over time.
  • The findings suggest personalized treatment approaches are essential, as both medications showed similar outcomes, and the low mortality rate (1.3%) indicates improved management of these tumors.

Background: A rise in hospital-acquired venous thromboembolism (HA-VTE) in children has led to increased awareness regarding VTE prophylaxis and risk assessment. Despite no consensus exists regarding these practices in pediatrics.

Objective: To describe common practices in VTE prophylaxis, VTE risk assessment models, and anticoagulation dosing strategies in pediatric hospitals that are members of the Children's Hospital Acquired Thrombosis (CHAT) Consortium.

Diversity across algal family Symbiodiniaceae contributes to the environmental resilience of certain coral species. Chlorophyll- fluorescence measurements are frequently used to determine symbiont health and resilience, but more work is needed to refine these tools and establish how they relate to underlying cellular traits. We examined trait diversity in symbionts from the generas and collected from 12 aquacultured coral species.
