Serum Periostin Levels are Significantly Higher in Patients with Primary Hyperparathyroidism and Closely Related to Osteoporosis.

Background: Periostin is an emerging biomarker that plays a role in bone metabolism and may be associated with bone mineral density (BMD). This study is aimed to investigate serum periostin levels in patients with primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) and its correlation with BMD in these patients.

Methods: Forty patients with newly diagnosed PHPT without co-morbidities and 30 healthy controls were included.

The epidermal growth factor receptor (ErbB) family and its ligands are essential for the regulation of multiple cellular processes required for mammalian reproduction. The objectives of this study were to investigate the expression and localisation of ErbB subtypes (ErbB1-4) and selected ligands, namely epidermal growth factor (EGF), amphiregulin (AREG) and neuregulin (NRG), in the cervix and vagina of cycling cows and to determine possible steroid hormone-dependence of their expression using immunohistochemistry. All four ErbBs and EGF, AREG and NRG proteins were found to be localised in the nucleus and cytoplasm of different cells in the cervix and vagina, and their expression differed during the oestrous cycle.

Urethritis in men at the Genito-Urinary Medicine Clinic Kuala Lumpur Hospital.

The clinical features and aetiology of 100 consecutive symptomatic heterosexual male patients with urethritis were studied from March 1994 to August 1994 in the Genito-Urinary Medicine (GUM) Clinic, Kuala Lumpur Hospital. Gonococcal urethritis (GU) was found to be more common (53%) than non-gonococcal urethritis(47%). All patients with GU confirmed microbiologically had clinically evident urethral discharge.
