Small intestinal neuroendocrine tumors (SI-NETs) are characterized by carcinoid syndrome and carcinoid heart disease (CHD). The aim of the present study was to identify early risk markers for carcinoid heart disease and survival in a prospective median-term follow-up setting. We measured 5-HIAA and cumulative 5-HIAA exposure (Cum-5-HIAA) based on repeated measurements, proBNP, vascular function, hepatic tumor load, and transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) at baseline and during the median 5-year follow-up.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) produced by human respiratory cells reflect metabolic and pathophysiological processes which can be detected with the use of modern technology. Analysis of exhaled breath or indoor air may potentially play an important role in screening of upper respiratory tract infections such as COVID-19 or influenza in the future. In this experimental study, air samples were collected and analyzed from the headspace of ancell culture infected by selected pathogens (influenza A H1N1 and seasonal coronaviruses OC43 and NL63).

Introduction: Severe childhood obesity can be caused by pathogenic variants in several genes involved in monogenic and syndromic obesity. Recently, heterozygous variants in pleckstrin homology domain interacting protein (PHIP) have been identified in patients with obesity as part of Chung-Jansen syndrome.

Case Presentation: The index patient is a 5-year-old boy with severe obesity since 1 year of age, developmental delay, facial dysmorphism, and behavior problems.
