The American alligator () is a keystone species of the southeastern United States. In December of 2022, a free-ranging American alligator was found stuporous and tetraparetic. On postmortem evaluation, lesions were limited to the central nervous system, consisting of prominent perivascular cuffs of lymphocytes and histiocytes that extended into the surrounding neuroparenchyma along with gliosis.

An autosomal recessively inherited noninflammatory arthropathy known as camptodactyly, arthropathy, coxa vara, and pericarditis (CACP) syndrome was discovered in 1999. It is distinguished by synoviocyte hyperplasia and subcapsular fibrosis of the synovial capsule, which results in a shortage of lubricin production. The resulting lack of joint lubrication induces increased mechanical stress, causing progressive deformities that become evident with weight-bearing and heightened joint activity.

  • The study aimed to assess how intraoperative neuromonitoring (IONM) affects the risk of stroke and mortality during coronary and valvular heart operations over a period of 11 years.
  • Out of 19,299 patients, 589 (3.1%) received IONM, and those patients had higher pre-existing cerebrovascular diseases, resulting in increased rates of operative mortality (5.3% vs 2.5%) and stroke (4.9% vs 1.9%).
  • However, after adjusting for patient characteristics, there was no significant difference in stroke or mortality rates between IONM users and non-users, suggesting that IONM may indicate risks rather than directly influence outcomes.

Neurological complications, including encephalopathy and stroke, occur in a significant proportion of COVID-19 cases but viral protein is seldom detected in the brain parenchyma. To model this situation, we developed a novel low-inoculum K18-hACE2 mouse model of SARS-CoV-2 infection during which active viral replication was consistently seen in mouse lungs but not in the brain. We found that several mediators previously associated with encephalopathy in clinical samples were upregulated in the lung, including CCL2, and IL-6.
