Background And Objective: In endodontics, a major diagnostic challenge is the accurate assessment of pulp status. In this study, we designed and characterized a fiber-based laser speckle imaging system to study pulsatile blood flow in the tooth.
Study Design/materials And Methods: To take transilluminated laser speckle images of the teeth, we built a custom fiber-based probe.
Objective: Prophylactic mastectomy (PM) offers 90% or greater reduction in risk of breast cancer to women at increased hereditary risk. Nonetheless, acceptance in North America is low (0-27%) and 25-50% of women electing surgery report psychological distress and/or difficulty adapting following PM. Most women also report reduced cancer worry postoperatively.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFA case-control study of the associations of retinoids and specific carotenoids with breast cancer using concentrations of these nutrients in breast adipose tissue was conducted among women attending a breast clinic in the Boston area in 1989-1992. Breast adipose tissue was collected during breast biopsy. Cases (n = 46) were women whose biopsies revealed invasive or in situ breast cancer; control subjects (n = 63) were women whose biopsies revealed benign disease.

However, the low rate of local recurrence after CS and RT for patients without known risk factors, and the recent increase in the detection of smaller cancers due to mammographic screening have led to the speculation that a subgroup of patients who have a low risk of local recurrence without RT might be identified. In 1986, we initiated a one-arm, prospective clinical trial of CS alone for treatment of highly selected breast cancer patients without known risk factors for local recurrence.

However, the prevalence of these mutations is unknown in women with breast cancer who do not have the features of this familial syndrome. We sought BRCA1 mutations in women who were given a diagnosis of breast cancer at an early age, because early onset is characteristic of a genetic predisposition to cancer.
