Photocaged compounds are chemical conjugates that are designed to release an active molecule upon exposure to light of a specific wavelength. In recent years, photocaged inducer molecules such as caged isopropyl β-D-1-thiogalactopyranoside (cIPTG) have been increasingly used as a powerful tool for light-driven gene expression in bacteria, allowing researchers to precisely and noninvasively tune the expression of specific target genes. In this chapter, we present a guideline for the synthesis of 6-nitropiperonyl photocaged IPTG (NP-cIPTG) as well as its in vivo application as an optochemical on-switch of gene transcription in Escherichia coli and other bacteria.

Background: Cognitive decline is an arising concern in patients who need cranial irradiation. We used the pooled longitudinal individual patient data of two phase III trials: NCT01780675 and PREMER to investigate whether hippocampal avoidance (HA)-PCI is associated with improved self-reported cognitive functioning (SRCF) compared with PCI without increasing brain metastases (BM) development within the HA area.

Methods: Patients with stage I-IV small cell lung cancer (SCLC) were randomized to PCI or HA-PCI.

Article Synopsis
  • A study was conducted to understand the incidence of acute kidney injury (AKI) in patients undergoing aortic valve replacement who also have aortic stenosis and complex coronary artery disease.
  • The research involved 1,232 patients and used statistical matching to focus on 40 pairs with similar risk scores, measuring factors like contrast medium use and renal function post-procedure.
  • Results showed no significant difference in AKI occurrence between surgical and percutaneous approaches, and AKI did not correlate with long-term mortality, suggesting that while contrast agents can affect kidney function temporarily, they don’t lead to worse outcomes.

Introduction: Efficient and cost-effective immobilization methods are crucial for advancing the utilization of enzymes in industrial biocatalysis. To this end, immobilization methods relying on the completely biological production of immobilizates represent an interesting alternative to conventional carrier-based immobilization methods. This study aimed to introduce a novel immobilization strategy using -produced magnetic protein aggregates (MPAs).

Background: Efficacy and safety of human monoclonal antibody erenumab used for migraine prophylaxis have been shown in clinical studies. APOLLON is an open-label, multi-center, single arm study, which permits dose adjustments of erenumab and includes an option for a drug holiday. The findings contribute to the accumulating long-term evidence regarding erenumab's tolerability and safety profile in individuals experiencing episodic and chronic migraines.
