Visualizing Nanoscale Distribution of Corrosion Cells by Open-Loop Electric Potential Microscopy.

Corrosion is a traditional problem but still one of the most serious problems in industry. To reduce the huge economic loss caused by corrosion, tremendous effort has been made to understand, predict and prevent it. Corrosion phenomena are generally explained by the formation of corrosion cells at a metal-electrolyte interface.

Protein-losing enteropathy due to thrombophlebitis of the mesenteric vein: report of a case.

We report herein the case of a 70-year-old woman with enteropathy accompanied by protein loss, the cause of which was found to be thrombophlebitis of the mesenteric vein. The patient was admitted to our hospital for investigations to determine the cause of hypoproteinemia. She had suffered an episode of left abdominal pain with high fever and vomiting lasting 10 days, 8 months prior to her admission.

Family background, cognitive abilities, and personality as predictors of education and occupational attainment across two generations.

This study reports on the relative influences of parental attainment and cognitive ability and subjects' own cognitive ability, personality, and social attitudes on the educational and occupational attainments and incomes of 183 Generation 3 subjects of Caucasian ancestry and 186 of Japanese ancestry originally tested in 1972-76 in the Hawaii Family Study of Cognition (HFSC) and re-tested in 1987-88. In contrast to earlier reports of sex differences in the influence of Generation 2 attainment and on Generation 3 attainment when these offspring were younger, family background had a trivial influence and own cognitive ability had a substantial influence on educational attainment for both racial/ethnic groups and both sexes. For income, however, own cognitive ability was only a significant predictor for male subjects.

[Left-sided gallbladder with accessory liver accompanied by intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma].

A 66-year-old female of left-sided gallbladder with accessory liver was reported. These anomalies were recognized during an operation of intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma. The gallbladder was located with its liver bed at the lateral segment of the liver.
