Obesity is a risk factor for type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and cardiovascular disease (CVD). Adipose tissue (AT) extracellular vesicles (EVs) could play a role in obesity and T2DM associated CVD progression via the influence of their specific cargo on gene expression in recipient cells. The aim of this work was to evaluate the effects of AT EVs of patients with obesity with/without T2DM on reverse cholesterol transport (RCT)-related gene expression in human monocyte-derived macrophages (MDMs) from healthy donors.

Obesity is a significant risk factor for the development of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Adipose tissue dysfunction can affect the pool of circulating exosomal miRNAs, driving concomitant disease in obesity. These exosomal miRNAs can reflect adipose tissue functionality, thus serving as prognostic biomarkers for disease monitoring in case of T2DM.

Article Synopsis
  • Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are membrane-bound structures derived from cells that facilitate communication and transport various biological materials like proteins and RNAs between cells.
  • Adipose tissue EVs are linked to regulating metabolism and inflammation, playing a role in obesity-related conditions, such as insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM).
  • This study characterizes EVs from visceral and subcutaneous fat in obese T2DM patients, revealing distinct morphological features and compositions that suggest altered EV production in these conditions compared to control groups.

The bariatric surgery is the most effective way of obesity treatment. The article describes an experience of placement of intragastric balloon as an additional method of treatment to diet and medicamentous therapy in one group of patients. At the same time, there was the other group, where intragstric balloons were placed before bariatric surgery as measure of preoperative preparation.
