Muscle biopsies of the descending portion of the trapezius muscle from female patients with chronic trapezius myalgia and from healthy women were analyzed with enzyme histochemical and immunohistochemical methods. Frequency, area, and capillarization of the muscle fiber types were determined. A biochemical analysis determined the lactate concentration of mixed muscle samples and the adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and phosphocreatine levels in single muscle fibers.

The clinical efficacy of the prostacyclin analogue iloprost was studied during a 2 week treatment and 6 month follow-up period in 103 patients with ischaemic ulcers who were randomised to receive active treatment or placebo. Responders were defined as those patients who achieved healing of at least one third of the ulcer area during the study period. The overall responder rate was 41.

The occurrence of abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs) and intracranial aneurysms (IAs) in the same patient and in the same family was studied among 89 patients with AAAs and 485 patients with IAs. Among the AAA-patients two had IAs themselves and five had IAs in the family, whereas three IA-patients had AAAs themselves and eight had AAAs in the family. Moreover, one of the patients with both AAA and IA had a blood relative with AAA, and in six of the families with both types of aneurysms there were more than two subjects with aneurysms.

It has been hypothesized that the mechanisms behind the association between blood group A and gastric carcinoma is that the carcinoma cells produce an antigen immunologically related to blood group A, which particularly in O-individuals may have a protective effect by preventing the growth and spread of the tumour. The hypothesis predicts that O-individuals would have a longer survival time than A-individuals and that eventually the protective effect in blood group O would be somewhat stronger in women with multiple pregnancies. The results showed a significantly lower frequency of blood group O in females and a tendency towards a longer survival time in O-individuals among gastric cancer patients, but the relationship between blood group O and number of children was not in the expected direction.

The aortic walls of patients with abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA) and of healthy controls were examined for elastin, collagen I and III, and the intermediate filament proteins desmin and vimentin by immunohistochemical, enzyme histochemical, and routine histological techniques. The morphology of the aneurysmatic walls varied considerably from case to case, but many pathological changes were seen in all cases, e.g.
