The corona virus disease (COVID-19) pandemic disrupted daily life worldwide, and its impact on child well-being remains a major concern. Neighborhood characteristics affect child well-being, but how these associations were affected by the pandemic is not well understood. We analyzed data from 1039 children enrolled in the Environmental influences on Child Health Outcomes Program whose well-being was assessed using the Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System Global Health questionnaire and linked these data to American Community Survey (ACS) data to evaluate the impacts of neighborhood characteristics on child well-being before and during the pandemic.

Background: There is increasing evidence linking infant rhinorrhea to school-age exercise-induced wheeze (EIW) via a parasympathetic nervous system pathway. The ratio of the root mean square of successive differences in heart beats (RMSSD) measured in quiet sleep versus active sleep (RMSSD) is a novel biomarker in asthma.

Objective: We tested the hypotheses that (1) neonatal rhinorrhea predicts childhood EIW independent of other neonatal respiratory symptoms, (2) neonatal RMSSD predicts childhood EIW, and (3) RMSSD mediates the association between neonatal rhinorrhea and childhood EIW.

Importance: Emotional and behavioral dysregulation during early childhood are associated with severe psychiatric, behavioral, and cognitive disorders through adulthood. Identifying the earliest antecedents of persisting emotional and behavioral dysregulation can inform risk detection practices and targeted interventions to promote adaptive developmental trajectories among at-risk children.

Negative associations of prenatal tobacco and alcohol exposure (PTE and PAE) on birth outcomes and childhood development have been well documented, but less is known about underlying mechanisms. A possible pathway for the adverse fetal outcomes associated with PTE and PAE is the alteration of fetal autonomic nervous system development. This study assessed PTE and PAE effects on measures of fetal autonomic regulation, as quantified by heart rate (HR), heart rate variability (SD-HR), movement, and HR-movement coupling in a population of fetuses at ≥ 34 weeks gestational age.

Pre-natal exposures to nicotine and alcohol are known risk factors for sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), the leading cause of post-neonatal infant mortality. Here, we present data on nicotinic receptor binding, as determined by I-epibatidine receptor autoradiography, in the brainstems of infants dying of SIDS and of other known causes of death collected from the Safe Passage Study, a prospective, multicenter study with clinical sites in Cape Town, South Africa and 5 United States sites, including 2 American Indian Reservations. We examined 15 pons and medulla regions related to cardiovascular control and arousal in infants dying of SIDS ( = 12) and infants dying from known causes ( = 20, 10 pre-discharge from time of birth, 10 post-discharge).

This manuscript is the result of an interdisciplinary team approach to examine the ethical and cultural considerations of biospecimen collection among American Indian and Alaskan Native (AIAN) communities for the planned Healthy Brain and Child Development (HBCD) study. We begin by reviewing a brief history of the treatment of AIAN communities by the US government and within research studies. Based in part on this history, we highlight the overlapping and intersecting vulnerabilities of AIAN communities, including historical trauma, poverty, lack of healthcare access, and environmental hazards.

Methods: We conducted an analysis of nutrition data from the Prenatal Alcohol and SIDS and Stillbirth (PASS) Network Safe Passage Study and the PASS Diet Screener study (N = 170). Diet intake, including dietary supplementation, was assessed by using three 24-hour recalls conducted on randomly selected, nonconsecutive days.

Precise identification of drinking and smoking patterns during pregnancy is crucial to better understand the risk to the fetus. The purpose of this manuscript is to describe the methodological approach used to define prenatal drinking and smoking trajectories from a large prospective pregnancy cohort, and to describe maternal characteristics associated with different exposure patterns. In the Safe Passage Study, detailed information regarding quantity, frequency, and timing of exposure was self-reported up to four times during pregnancy and at 1 month post-delivery.

Prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) has been linked to poor pregnancy outcomes, yet there is no recognized standard for PAE assessment, and the specific effects of quantity, frequency, and timing remain largely unknown. The objective of this study was to compare a short dietary screener developed to assess diet quality with interviewer-administered telephone 24-hour dietary recalls in a population of pregnant Northern Plains (NP) American Indian women. Participants were recruited from NP clinical sites of the Prenatal Alcohol and SIDS and Stillbirth (PASS) Network, as part of a large, prospective, multidisciplinary study.
