Associations between styloid process sheath CT sizes and age, body weight, and breed in horses.

The styloid process sheath (SPS) is a part of the tympanic temporal bone and an incomplete bony sleeve surrounding the styloid process, tympanohyoid cartilage, and dorsal part of the stylohyoid bone. In horses undergoing head CT, we observed a range of SPS sizes and questioned whether differences were early features of temporohyoid osteoarthropathy (THO) or normal anatomic variations associated with age, body weight, sex, or breed. We hypothesized that SPS sizes were positively correlated with age and body weight, but not with sex or breed.

Computed tomography (CT) has revolutionized the veterinarian's ability to image the equine skull and led to improved diagnostic accuracy and clarity for surgical planning. The increased cost for this evaluation is offset by more accurate diagnosis and targeted therapy. As novel technology is developed that allows for increased availability of equine head, the price will continue to decrease and more examinations will be performed.

CASE DESCRIPTION Three 21-week-old sexually intact female sibling domestic shorthair cats were brought to an emergency clinic because of signs of sudden respiratory distress that were noted by the owner after the cats had been confined for approximately 10 hours in a room with an operating ozone-generating air purifier. No other potential toxicant exposures were reported. CLINICAL FINDINGS On initial examination, the 3 cats were severely dyspneic and tachypneic.

Blood flow through sutured and coupled microvascular anastomoses: a comparative computational study.

This study uses computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to model blood flow through idealised sutured and coupled arterial anastomoses to investigate the affect of each technique on intravascular blood flow. Local flow phenomena are examined in detail to study characteristics that potentially initiate thrombus formation; for example, changes in velocity profile, wall shear stress (WSS), and shear strain rate (SSR). Idealised geometries of sutured and coupled anastomoses were created with dimensions identical to microvascular suture material and a commercially available coupling device using CFD software.
