An exploration of nursing and Allied Health Professional (AHP)-led post-treatment surveillance and survivorship care for people with head and neck cancer-a scoping review.

Unlabelled: A scoping literature review was undertaken to identify the current evidence base on the role of nursing and allied health professionals (AHPs) in delivering surveillance and survivorship services within head and neck cancer (HNC) care following treatment.

Method: This review was undertaken according to the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) guidance on the conduct of scoping reviews. An initial database search was undertaken between December 2023 and February 2024 and then repeated in November 2024.

The effect of adductor canal block on outcomes of total knee arthroplasty: A single centre, historical cohort study.

Background: Adductor canal blocks (ACBs) have been associated with reduced pain following total knee arthroplasty (TKA). There is a paucity of evidence regarding whether these early differences impact longer term outcomes. This study aimed to identify whether using ACB in TKA was associated with improvements in both early and late outcomes.

The Association Between Delaying Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction in Adolescents and Increasing Meniscal and Chondral Pathology: A Cohort Study of 2740 Adolescents.

Background: A growing body of evidence surrounds secondary meniscal and cartilage pathology after delay to anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction (ACLR). Many of these studies focus on or include an adult population.

Purpose: To elucidate the prevalence of secondary meniscal and chondral pathology with delay to ACLR in the adolescent population as well as examine the influence of sex, skeletal maturity, and trends over the years.

Speech and language therapist-led clinics for low-risk suspected head and neck cancer referrals: A qualitative study of ear, nose and throat surgeons' views.

Background: Over 200,000 patients are referred onto the suspected head and neck cancer (HNC) pathway annually in the UK, with around 3% receiving a cancer diagnosis. With new HNC advancements in identifying patients at low risk of a cancer diagnosis, one proposal is a speech and language therapy (SLT)-led first point of contact clinic for low-risk patients presenting with voice or swallowing symptoms.

Aims: To explore ear, nose and throat (ENT) surgeons' views regarding this model.

Patient and Caregiver Experience of Diagnosis, Treatment, and Living With Recurrent Oropharyngeal Cancer.

Importance: The management of recurrent oropharyngeal cancer (rOPC) is complex. Curative options carry considerable risk of morbidity with overall poor prognosis. Little data exist on function and quality of life (QoL) outcomes for noncurative treatments.

Outcomes of ACL Reconstruction Utilizing Supercritical CO-Sterilized Allografts.

Background: Allograft tendons are perceived to have a high ACL graft failure rate in primary anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction (ACLR). Historical series may be biased by graft processing methods that degrade the biomechanical properties of donor tendons such as irradiation. Supercritical carbon dioxide (SCCO) is a validated method of terminally sterilizing biomaterials at physiological temperatures without irradiation, but in vivo use of SCCO-processed tendon allografts for primary ACLR has not been reported to date.

The timed 100 mL water swallow test for patients with head and neck cancer: What constitutes a clinically significant difference?

Objectives: Swallowing function in patients with head and neck cancer (HNC) is often assessed pre-treatment, during and at intervals post-treatment to identify those with dysphagia as early as possible. This study aims to investigate the minimal clinical important difference (MCID) for the 100 mL water swallow test (100 mL WST) to increase its utility in clinical practice and in clinical trials.

Methods: Data from 211 HNC patients, treated by either single or combined modality were included.

Comparison of Contralateral ACL Rupture Versus ACL Graft Rupture in Australian Netballers After ACL Reconstruction.

Background: Netball is a popular sport worldwide, particularly for women. However, its nature puts players at high risk for anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury.

Purpose: To determine (1) the prevalence of ACL graft rupture and contralateral ACL (CACL) rupture in Australian female netballers after ACL reconstruction (ACLR) and (2) the rate of return to sports (RTS) and psychological readiness.

20-Year Outcomes of High Tibial Osteotomy: Determinants of Survival and Functional Outcome.

Background: High tibial osteotomy (HTO) is a successful joint-preserving procedure for the treatment of medial compartment osteoarthritis. Long-term survivorship of HTO ranges from 40% to 85%. There are consistent factors that predict failure.

The voice and swallowing profile of adults with laryngotracheal stenosis before and after reconstructive surgery: A prospective, descriptive observational study.

Objectives: Airway reconstruction for laryngo tracheal stenosis (LTS) improves dyspnoea. There is little evidence relating to impact upon voice and swallowing. We explored voice and swallowing outcomes in adults with LTS before and after reconstructive surgery.

Dysphagia-optimised intensity-modulated radiotherapy versus standard intensity-modulated radiotherapy in patients with head and neck cancer (DARS): a phase 3, multicentre, randomised, controlled trial.

Background: Most newly diagnosed oropharyngeal and hypopharyngeal cancers are treated with chemoradiotherapy with curative intent but at the consequence of adverse effects on quality of life. We aimed to investigate if dysphagia-optimised intensity-modulated radiotherapy (DO-IMRT) reduced radiation dose to the dysphagia and aspiration related structures and improved swallowing function compared with standard IMRT.

Methods: DARS was a parallel-group, phase 3, multicentre, randomised, controlled trial done in 22 radiotherapy centres in Ireland and the UK.

Comparison of CT and EOS in assessing coronal lower limb alignment when planning total knee arthroplasty.

Background: As surgical technologies and alignment strategies develop, accuracy of lower limb alignment assessment gains increasing importance. The current gold standard remains long leg (4ft) radiographs. Other measures include computed tomography (CT) and EOS scans.

Addressing patients' concerns in speech and language therapy consultations following the diagnosis and treatment of head and neck cancer.

Purpose Of Review: Head and neck cancer (HNC) and its treatment impacts profoundly on patients' functional abilities, emotional well being and social interactions. Communication and swallowing are fundamental to everyday life, and the Speech and Language Therapist (SLT) has a critical role for both patients and their carers. In clinical practice, patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) are a key part of the armamentarium of the SLT.

TORPEdO: A phase III trial of intensity-modulated proton beam therapy versus intensity-modulated radiotherapy for multi-toxicity reduction in oropharyngeal cancer.

•There is a lack of prospective level I evidence for the use of PBT for most adult cancers including oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC).•TORPEdO is the UK's first PBT clinical trial and aims to determine the benefits of PBT for OPSCC.•Training and support has been provided before and during the trial to reduce variations of contouring and radiotherapy planning.

Patient-reported impairment following TKA is reduced when a computationally simulated predicted ideal alignment is achieved.

Purpose: Joint dynamics following Total Knee Arthroplasty (TKA) may influence patient-reported outcome. Simulations allow many knee alignment approaches to a single patient to be considered prior to surgery. The simulated kinematics can be matched to patient-reported outcome to predict kinematic patterns most likely to give the best outcome.

The role of the speech and language therapist in the rehabilitation of speech, swallowing, voice and trismus in people diagnosed with head and neck cancer.

Head and neck cancer (HNC) and its treatment can have a significant impact on physical and psychosocial wellbeing. A multidisciplinary team (MDT) approach is critical to reduce the potential acute, long-term and late effects of treatment by optimising function at baseline, supporting people during treatment and with rehabilitation post treatment. The key focus for speech and language therapists is to support the holistic needs of people with a focus on speech, swallowing, voice and mouth opening.

Repeat Anterior Cruciate Ligament Injury and Return to Sport in Australian Soccer Players After Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction With Hamstring Tendon Autograft.

Background: Soccer is the most commonly played team sport in the world and a high-risk sport for anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury and subsequent ACL reconstruction (ACLR).

Purpose: To assess the rate of further ACL injury in patients who have undergone ACLR with hamstring tendon autograft after soccer injuries in Australia and to determine factors associated with repeat ACL injury and return to soccer.

Opioid use and patient outcomes in an Australian hip and knee arthroplasty cohort.

Background: To determine the prevalence of opioid use in Australian hip (THA) or knee (TKA) cohort, and its association with outcomes.

Methods: About 837 primary THA or TKA subjects prospectively completed Oxford Scores, and Knee or Hip Osteoarthritis Outcomes Score(KOOS/HOOS) and opioid use in the previous week before arthroplasty. Subjects repeated the baseline survey at 6 months, with additional questions regarding satisfaction.

Transoral Robotic Surgery for Recurrent Tumors of the Upper Aerodigestive Tract (RECUT): An International Cohort Study.

Background: Transoral robotic surgery (TORS) is an emerging minimally invasive surgical treatment for residual, recurrent, and new primary head and neck cancers in previously irradiated fields, with limited evidence for its oncological effectiveness.

Methods: A retrospective observational cohort study of consecutive cases performed in 16 high-volume international centers before August 2018 was conducted (registered at clinicaltrials.gov [NCT04673929] as the RECUT study).

COVID-VU - ENT-UK national survey of flexible nasendoscopy in the upper aerodigestive tract amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

Background: Flexible nasendoscopy (FNE) is an invaluable multi-disciplinary tool for upper aerodigestive tract (UADT) examination. During the COVID-19 pandemic concerns were raised that FNE had the potential of generating aerosols resulting in human cross-contamination when performed on SARS-COV2 carriers. In the UK, and other European countries, national guidelines were issued restricting FNE to essential cases.

Surgery for Osteoarthritis: Total Joint Arthroplasty, Realistic Expectations of Rehabilitation and Surgical Outcomes: A Narrative Review.

This narrative review highlights the prevalence of osteoarthritis as a chronic disease that directly contributes to the ever-growing health care expenditure to treat this condition. The increasing demand of total joint arthroplasty globally is explained in conjunction with the importance of understanding candidate suitability for arthroplasty surgery in order to maximize surgical outcomes and self-reported patient satisfaction after the surgery. Rehabilitation care following total hip arthroplasty and total knee arthroplasty, particularly the inappropriate use of inpatient rehabilitation service, is also explained, in addition to the enhanced recovery after surgery.

Foot Pain is Common, But Frequently Improves 1 Year After Total Knee Arthroplasty.

Background: Osteoarthritis frequently affects multiple joints through the lower limbs. This study sought to examine the incidence of foot pain in subjects undergoing total knee arthroplasty (TKA) and determine if foot symptoms improved following surgery.

Methods: Six hundred ten subjects undergoing TKA completed patient-reported outcome measures preoperatively, and at 6 and/or 12 months after surgery including the incidence and severity of foot or ankle pain, Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Scores (KOOS) Joint Replacement, Oxford Knee Scores (OKS), EQ5D, and satisfaction.
