Animals within social groups respond to costs and benefits of sociality by adjusting the proportion of time they spend in close proximity to other individuals in the group (cohesion). Variation in cohesion between individuals, in turn, shapes important group-level processes such as subgroup formation and fission-fusion dynamics. Although critical to animal sociality, a comprehensive understanding of the factors influencing cohesion remains a gap in our knowledge of cooperative behavior in animals.

The integration of titanium (Ti)-based implants with bone is limited, resulting in implant failure. This lack of osteointegration is due to the foreign body response (FBR) that occurs after the implantation of biodevices. The process begins with protein adsorption, which is governed by implant surface properties, e.

Quasi-isentropic compression enables one to study the solidification of metastable liquid states that are inaccessible through other experimental means. The onset of this nonequilibrium solidification is known to depend on the compression rate and material-specific factors, but this complex interdependence has not been well characterized. In this study, we use a combination of experiments, theory, and computational simulations to derive a general scaling law that quantifies this dependence.

Background: Potential risk associated with low-dose radiation exposures is often expressed using the effective dose (E) quantity. Other risk-related quantities have been proposed as alternatives. The recently introduced risk index (RI) shares similarities with E but expands the metric to incorporate medical imaging-appropriate risks factors including patient-specific size, age, and sex.

Background: Pediatric molecular imaging requires a balance between administering an activity that will yield sufficient diagnostic image quality while maintaining patient radiation exposure at acceptable levels. In current clinical practice, this balance is arrived at by the current North American Consensus Guidelines in which patient weight is used to recommend the administered activity (AA).

Purpose: We have previously demonstrated that girth (waist circumference at the level of the kidneys) is better at equalizing image quality than patient weight for pediatric Tc-99m DMSA renal function imaging.

Medical internal radiation dosimetry constitutes a fundamental aspect of diagnosis, treatment, optimization, and safety in nuclear medicine. The MIRD committee of the Society of Nuclear Medicine and Medical Imaging developed a new computational tool to support organ-level and suborgan tissue dosimetry (MIRDcalc, version 1). Based on a standard Excel spreadsheet platform, MIRDcalc provides enhanced capabilities to facilitate radiopharmaceutical internal dosimetry.

Radiopharmaceutical dosimetry is usually estimated via organ-level MIRD schema-style formalisms, which form the computational basis for commonly used clinical and research dosimetry software. Recently, MIRDcalc internal dosimetry software was developed to provide a freely available organ-level dosimetry solution that incorporates up-to-date models of human anatomy, addresses uncertainty in radiopharmaceutical biokinetics and patient organ masses, and offers a 1-screen user interface as well as quality assurance tools. The present work describes the validation of MIRDcalc and, secondarily, provides a compendium of radiopharmaceutical dose coefficients obtained with MIRDcalc.

Fibril curvature is bioinstructive to attached cells. Similar to natural healthy tissues, an engineered extracellular matrix can be designed to stimulate cells to adopt desired phenotypes. To take full advantage of the curvature control in biomaterial fabrication methodologies, an understanding of the response to fibril subcellular curvature is required.

Mechanotransduction arises from information encoded in the shape of materials such as curvature. It induces activation of small GTPase signaling affecting cell phenotypes including differentiation. We carried out a set of preliminary experiments to test the hypothesis that curvature (1/radius) would also affect cell motility due to signal pathway crosstalk.

Unlabelled: Tc-DMSA is one of the most commonly used pediatric nuclear medicine imaging agents. Nevertheless, there are no pharmacokinetic (PK) models for Tc-DMSA in children, and currently available pediatric dose estimates for Tc-DMSA use pediatric S values with PK data derived from adults. Furthermore, the adult PK data were collected in the mid-70's using quantification techniques and instrumentation available at the time.

We propose a deep learning-based anthropomorphic model observer (DeepAMO) for image quality evaluation of multi-orientation, multi-slice image sets with respect to a clinically realistic 3D defect detection task. The DeepAMO is developed based on a hypothetical model of the decision process of a human reader performing a detection task using a 3D volume. The DeepAMO is comprised of three sequential stages: defect segmentation, defect confirmation (DC), and rating value inference.

Article Synopsis
  • Skeletal scintigraphy in pediatric patients primarily uses Tc-MDP, which tends to accumulate in bone, especially in the growth plates of long bones.
  • The study modified computational models to assess how varying concentrations of Tc-MDP in growth plates affect radiation doses, indicating that increased activity in these areas leads to decreased doses in surrounding soft tissues and active marrow.
  • Results showed significant reductions in radiation exposure to internal organs and active bone marrow while increasing self-dose to the growth plates, suggesting a trade-off in risk based on Tc-MDP distribution.

Current guidelines for administered activity (AA) in pediatric nuclear medicine imaging studies are based on a 2016 harmonization of the 2010 North American Consensus guidelines and the 2007 European Association of Nuclear Medicine pediatric dosage card. These guidelines assign AA scaled to patient body mass, with further constraints on maximum and minimum values of radiopharmaceutical activity. These guidelines, however, are not formulated based upon a rigor-ous evaluation of diagnostic image quality.

Introduction: The tobacco-specific nitrosamines (TSNAs) are an important group of carcinogens found in tobacco and tobacco smoke. To describe and characterize the levels of TSNAs in the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) Study Wave 1 (2013-2014), we present four biomarkers of TSNA exposure: N'-nitrosonornicotine, N'-nitrosoanabasine, N'-nitrosoanatabine, and 4-(methylnitrosamino)-1-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanol (NNAL) which is the primary urinary metabolite of 4-(methylnitrosamino)-1-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanone.

Methods: We measured total TSNAs in 11 522 adults who provided urine using automated solid-phase extraction coupled to isotope dilution liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry.

Urban environments are unique because fragments of natural or semi-natural habitat are embedded within a potentially permeable matrix of human-dominated areas, creating increased landscape and, potentially, habitat heterogeneity. In addition, urban areas can provide diet subsidies for wildlife species in the form of fruiting ornamental plants, trash, and domestic animals. Ecological opportunity in the forms of habitat and food heterogeneity are thought to be important mechanisms in maintaining individual specialization.

Recently, Richtmyer-Meshkov instability (RMI) experiments driven by high explosives and fielded with perturbations on a free surface have been used to study strength at extreme strain rates and near zero pressure. The RMI experiments reported here used impact loading, which is experimentally simpler, more accurate to analyze, and which also allows the exploration of a wider range of conditions. Three experiments were performed on tantalum at shock stresses from 20 to 34 GPa, with six different perturbation sizes at each shock level, making this the most comprehensive set of strength-focused RMI experiments reported to date on any material.

Orthopedic implants rely on facilitating a robust interaction between the implant material surface and the surrounding bone tissue. Ideally, the interface will encourage osseointegration with the host bone, resulting in strong fixation and implant stability. However, implant failure can occur due to the lack of integration with bone tissue or bacterial infection.

Assessment of health effects from low-dose radiation exposures in patients undergoing diagnostic imaging is an active area of research. High-quality dosimetry information pertaining to these medical exposures is generally not readily available to clinicians or epidemiologists studying radiation-related health risks. The purpose of this study was to provide methods for organ dose estimation in pediatric patients undergoing four common diagnostic fluoroscopy procedures: the upper gastrointestinal (UGI) series, the lower gastrointestinal (LGI) series, the voiding cystourethrogram (VCUG) and the modified barium swallow (MBS).

Mesh-type and voxel-based computational phantoms comprise the current state of the art for internal dose assessment via Monte Carlo simulations but excel in different aspects, with mesh-type phantoms offering advantages over their voxel counterparts in terms of their flexibility and realistic representation of detailed patient- or subject-specific anatomy. We have developed PARaDIM (pronounced "paradigm": Particle and Heavy Ion Transport Code System-Based Application for Radionuclide Dosimetry in Meshes), a freeware application for implementing tetrahedral mesh-type phantoms in absorbed dose calculations. It considers all medically relevant radionuclides, including α, β, γ, positron, and Auger/conversion electron emitters, and handles calculation of mean dose to individual regions, as well as 3-dimensional dose distributions for visualization and analysis in a variety of medical imaging software.

Of all the medical imaging modalities that utilize ionizing radiation, fluoroscopy proves to be the most difficult to assess values of patient organ dose owing to the dynamic and patient-specific nature of the irradiation geometry and its associated x-ray beam characteristics. With the introduction of the radiation dose structured report (RDSR) in the mid-2000s, however, computational tools have been developed to extract patient and procedure-specific data for each irradiation event of the study, and when coupled to a computational phantom of the patient, values of skin and internal organ dose may be assessed. Unfortunately, many legacy and even current diagnostic fluoroscopy units do not have RDSR reporting capabilities, thus limiting these dosimetry reporting advances.
