Article Synopsis
  • The study examines the link between the age at which women begin menstruating (menarche) and the risk of developing metabolic syndrome (MetS) and other health issues like obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease (CVD) in women over 30.
  • Data from 30,916 participants in South Korea shows that those who started menstruating early (before 11) have a significantly higher risk of these conditions compared to those who start at the median age of 14.
  • Additionally, late menarche (after 17) is associated with MetS, indicating a reversed J-shaped pattern where risks are notably high for early onset but less consistent for late onset, suggesting the potential for targeted early interventions based on men

Studies on noninvasive factors and predicting the maintenance of pregnancy, and those comparing the usefulness of these factors with invasive amniotic fluid markers in predicting the maintenance of pregnancy following rescue cerclage, are lacking. Therefore, this study aimed to determine whether C-reactive protein (CRP) levels, White blood cell (WBC) count, absolute neutrophil count (ANC), and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) in maternal blood, which are noninvasive and readily available clinical markers, can predict the maintenance of pregnancy following rescue cerclage in patients with cervical insufficiency (CI). A total of 142 singleton pregnant women (15-28 wk) who underwent rescue cerclage for CI were retrospectively evaluated.

Background: Endometrial cancer (EC) has robust molecular diagnostic evidence that correlates well with prognosis. In various types of cancers, FcRn has been identified as an early marker for prognosis. This study aims to assess FcRn expression and its association with clinicopathological features in endometrial cancer.

Background/aim: As maternal morbidity and mortality during pregnancy have increased during the COVID-19 pandemic, studies on pregnancy-related complications from SARS-CoV-2 infection are being actively conducted. Considering that pregnant women with COVID-19 may develop a preeclampsia (PE)-like syndrome, it is necessary to differentiate it from PE because true PE can result in an unfavorable perinatal outcome during a hasty delivery.

Materials And Methods: We investigated the protein expression of transmembrane serine protease 2 (TMPRSS2) and angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) in placental samples from 42 normotensive (n=9) and PE (n=33) patients without SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Article Synopsis
  • - A 42-year-old pregnant woman developed severe symptoms, including seizures and high fever, after testing positive for SARS-CoV-2, leading to her emergency room visit at 35 weeks of gestation.
  • - Despite normal lab results apart from hyperthyroidism, the patient's condition deteriorated, necessitating an emergency cesarean section where a healthy baby was delivered.
  • - Post-delivery, the woman was diagnosed with a thyroid storm induced by Graves' disease, believed to be triggered by her COVID-19 infection.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigated the Hippo signaling pathway's role in endometrial cancer by analyzing the expression of key components in tumor specimens from 60 patients.
  • Findings indicated that higher YAP expression was linked to patients under 60 and those with less myometrial invasion, while -YAP expression was associated with larger tumor sizes.
  • The research suggests age and tumor size are important factors related to YAP and -YAP expression, indicating a need for further studies on their significance in predicting clinical outcomes in endometrial cancer.

Article Synopsis
  • AGR2 is a protein linked to cancer that promotes metastasis and is highly expressed in various cancers.
  • Etravirine, a drug typically used for HIV treatment, was found to induce the degradation of AGR2, reducing cancer cell proliferation, migration, and invasion in lab tests.
  • In mouse models, combining etravirine with paclitaxel effectively slowed down cancer progression and metastasis, suggesting its potential as a treatment for ovarian cancer.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to compare survival outcomes of total abdominal radical hysterectomy (TARH) versus laparoscopy-assisted radical vaginal hysterectomy (LARVH) in stage IA2-IB2 cervical cancer.

Methods: 812 patients who underwent RH between 2008 and 2017 were evaluated in 3 institutions. Progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) were analyzed with Kaplan-Meier method and compared by log-rank test.

Objectives: To evaluate the feasibility and safety of two-port myomectomy using bag-contained manual morcellation compared to three-port myomectomy using power morcellation.

Material And Methods: A retrospective chart review was conducted for 428 cases of either two-port or three-port laparoscopic myomectomy performed by single operator in the university hospital between January 2011 and December 2016.

Results: The cohorts of three-port myomectomy with power morcellation was consisted of two hundred and forty-eight patients.

Objective: The objective of the study was to compare cosmetic outcomes and overall satisfaction rate of cesarean section scar between conventional subcuticular suture and intradermal buried vertical mattress.

Methods: Patients were enrolled to the study by chart review. A scar assessment was obtained retrospectively through a telephone survey.

Objective: To investigate the prognostic significance of preoperative lymphocyte-monocyte ratio (LMR) in elderly patients with advanced epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) receiving primary cytoreductive surgery and adjuvant platinum-based chemotherapy.

Methods: A total of 42 elderly patients (≥65 years) diagnosed with EOC who are receiving primary cytoreductive surgery and adjuvant platinum-based chemotherapy from 2009 to 2012 was included. LMR was calculated from complete blood cell count sampled before operation.

Autoamputated ovary with mature cystic teratoma (MCT) is a rarely reported gynecologic entity with an unknown prevalence. A 34-year-old woman referred to our clinic for presumed left ovarian tumor. Pelvic examination, ultrasonography and computed tomography scan revealed a 5-cm, cystic ovarian mass with calcification and fat component, and tumor markers were as follows, cancer antigen (CA) 125; 10.

We report a non-puerperal uterine inversion with nulliparous women caused by huge pedunculated submucosal fibroid. Massive bleeding from protruding mass through vagina brought the heart to stop in 42-year-old nulliparous woman. She became cardiopulmonary resuscitation survivor in emergency room and then underwent laparotomy which ended in successful myomectomy rather than hysterectomy considering her demand for future fertility.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to compare clinical outcomes of conventional laparoscopic surgery and laparoendoscopic single-site surgery (LESS) in the surgical treatment of tubal ectopic pregnancy.

Material And Methods: A total of 156 patients were diagnosed with ectopic pregnancies by ultrasonography and serum β-human chorionic gonadotrophin (β-hCG) levels at Pusan National University Yangsan Hospital from January 2009 through December 2013. We excluded 28 patients who only received medical treatment, 15 patients who underwent surgery by laparotomy for severe hypovolemic shock, and 30 patients who presented with less than 1 L of hemoperitoneum.
