Article Synopsis
- Fungal prosthetic joint infections (PJIs) are rare and challenging to treat, and a systematic review of 164 patients was conducted to assess treatment outcomes and provide recommendations.
- Most patients presented with symptoms like pain and swelling, with a significant percentage showing risk factors for fungal PJIs and evidence of prosthesis loosening; Candida species were the most commonly cultured fungi.
- Staged revision surgery was found to be the most effective treatment, with an 85% success rate, and a recommendation for at least 6 weeks of systemic antifungal therapy post-surgery to ensure infection resolution before reimplantation.
