Objectives: To explore the mechanism of Granules (QDG) for alleviating brain damage in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs).
Methods: Twelve 5-week-old SHRs were randomized into SHR control group and SHR+QDG group treated with QDG by gavage at the daily dose of 0.9 g/kg for 12 weeks.

In this work, a multifunctional theranostic agent was designed by covalently binding hydroxyl- and amino-bearing C60 derivatives (C60 O∼10 (OH)∼16 (NH2 )∼6 (NO2 )∼6 ⋅24 H2 O) with gadolinium diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (Gd-DTPA) to yield C60 O∼10 (OH)∼16 (NH2 )∼6 (NO2 )∼6 ⋅24 H2 O/(Gd-DTPA)3 (DF1 Gd3 ). The obtained DF1 Gd3 shows more than fourfold contrast improvement over commercial Gd-DTPA along with multiwavelength fluorescent emission for dual-modality diagnosis.

Based on the high photodynamic efficacy of trimalonic acid-modified C70 fullerene (TF70), we constructed an aptamer-guided TF70 photosensitizer and investigated its photodynamic effect. Conjugation of the novel aptamer (named R13) could effectively enhance the PDT efficiency of TF70 against A549 lung cancer cells in the presence of serum.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFSize-controllable amine-functionalized graphene quantum dots (GQDs) are prepared by an eco-friendly method with graphene oxide sheets, ammonia and hydrogen peroxide as starting materials. Using a Sephadex G-25 gel column for fine separation, for the first time we obtain GQDs with either single or double layers. By atomic force microscopy characterization, we confirm that hydrogen peroxide and ammonia play a synergistic role on graphene oxide (GO), in which the former cuts the GO into small pieces and the latter passivates the active surface to give amine-modified GQDs.

Macromolecular magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast agent Gd-DTPA-HSA (DTPA, diethylene triamine pentacetate acid; HSA, human serum albumin) as a model has been successfully conjugated with trimalonic acid modified C60 for contrast enhancement at clinically used magnetic field strength. The Gd-DTPA-HSA-C60 conjugate exhibit maximal relaxivity (r1 = 86 mM(-1) s(-1) at 0.5 T, 300 K) reported so far, which is much superior to that of the control Gd-DTPA-HSA (r1 = 38 mM(-1 )s(-1)) under the same condition and comparable to the theoretical maximum (r1 = 80-120 mM(-1) s(-1), at 20 MHz and 298 K), indicating the synergistic effect of HSA and carboxylfullerene on the increased contrast enhancement.

The photodynamic efficiency of these carboxyfullerenes depends mainly on the cage size, C(60) versus C(70) , and to a lesser extent on the adduct numbers. In particular, malonic acid modified C(70) fullerenes are more efficient than their C(60) counterparts as photosensitizers, and the mechanism of cell death induced by C(70) -carboxyfullerene under light irradiation is investigated in detail.

It was shown that Y(3)N@C(78) has an unconventional C(78)-C(2) cage with two pairs of fused pentagons closely bonded with two yttrium atoms. DFT calculations showed that the size of the ionic radii of the metals forming the caged cluster plays an important role in the non-isolated-pentagon-rule-feature of the C(78) cage.

The retarded roots with shortened length and loss of root gravitropism were observed for seedlings grown in the fullerene-containing medium. Fluorescence imaging revealed the abnormalities of root tips in hormone distribution, cell division, microtubule organization, and mitochondrial activity.
