Article Synopsis
  • In April 2012, Japan's health insurance system included perioperative oral management (POM) to help reduce pneumonia risk in cancer patients, leading to a noticeable decrease in postoperative pneumonia rates.
  • A study comparing 11,886 patients treated before and 13,668 patients treated after POM's implementation showed significant reductions in pneumonia cases, hospital stays, and deaths.
  • The cost-effectiveness analysis revealed that preventing pneumonia costs about 111,927 yen per patient, resulting in a potential savings of over 250 million yen in healthcare costs, suggesting future improvements in POM efficiency.
