Asymmetric dearomatization of 1-aminonaphthalene derivatives by gold-catalyzed intramolecular double C-C bond formation.

It has been established that a cationic gold(I)/axially chiral biaryl bisphosphine complex catalyzes asymmetric dearomatization of 1-aminonaphthalene derivatives by the intramolecular double C-C bond formation. Two different dearomatization products were obtained depending on the substituents on the benzyl groups at the alkyne termini.

Suppression of the pancreatic duodenal homeodomain transcription factor-1 (Pdx-1) promoter by sterol regulatory element-binding protein-1c (SREBP-1c).

Overexpression of sterol regulatory element-binding protein-1c (SREBP-1c) in β cells causes impaired insulin secretion and β cell dysfunction associated with diminished pancreatic duodenal homeodomain transcription factor-1 (PDX-1) expression in vitro and in vivo. To identify the molecular mechanism responsible for this effect, the mouse Pdx-1 gene promoter (2.7 kb) was analyzed in β cell and non-β cell lines.

Synthesis of neutral glycosphingolipids from Zygomycetes.

Novel neutral glycosphingolipids (NGSLs) containing Gal-alpha1-->6Gal, previously found in the Zygomycetes species Mucor hiemalis, were synthesized. The structures of these compounds are different from those of other fungal GSLs, and they are expected to be involved in host-parasite interactions. A key step in their synthesis is direct 1,2-cis alpha-selective galactosylation of 4,6-diol tri- and tetrasaccharide acceptors with a galactosyl donor in the presence of N-iodosuccinimide (NIS)/trifluoromethanesulfonic acid (TfOH).

Impact of markedly elevated serum lipoprotein(a) levels (> or = 100 mg/dL) on the risk of coronary heart disease.

The serum lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)] concentration is under genetic control, and most humans have values lower than 30 mg/dL. Subjects with markedly elevated serum Lp(a) concentrations, that is, > or =100 mg/dL, are rarely encountered, and these subjects have not yet been fully characterized from the clinical point of view. In the present investigation, we studied a total of 223 subjects, comprising 123 males and 100 females, with serum Lp(a) values of more than 100 mg/dL.

Syntheses of model compounds related to an antigenic epitope in pectic polysaccharides from Bupleurum falcatum L. (II).

Stereocontrolled syntheses of model compounds related to a major antigenic epitope against antibupleurum 2IIc/PG-1-IgG from antiulcer pectic polysaccharide are described. A trisaccharide derivative (13) was prepared as a precursor and a novel and simple approach for the rational design of a glycocluster and glycodendrimer was developed, through the syntheses of the fluorescence-labeled glycocluster (2) and glycodendrimer (3).

Effect of high-frequency jet ventilation on oxygenation during one-lung ventilation in patients undergoing thoracic aneurysm surgery.

Purpose: To evaluate the effect of high-frequency jet ventilation (HFJV) and continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) on oxygenation and the shunt fraction (Qs/Qt) during one-lung ventilation (OLV).

Methods: Twenty-five patients who were undergoing resection of a descending aortic aneurysm were studied. Arterial oxygenation, Qs/Qt, and hemodynamics were evaluated just before the initiation of OLV (T1), 15 min after OLV (T2), and 15 min (T3) and 30 min (T4) after the application of HFJV or CPAP to the nondependent lung.

[Optimization of flip angle for 3D-VIBE technique in liver dynamic MRI].

Sterol regulatory element-binding proteins activate insulin gene promoter directly and indirectly through synergy with BETA2/E47.

Insulin gene expression is regulated by pancreatic beta cell-specific factors, PDX-1 and BETA2/E47. Here we have demonstrated that the insulin promoter is a novel target for SREBPs established as lipid-synthetic transcription factors. Promoter analyses of rat insulin I gene in non-beta cells revealed that nuclear SREBP-1c activates the insulin promoter through three novel SREBP-binding sites (SREs), two of which overlap with E-boxes, binding sites for BETA2/E47.
