Microscopic observation of single molecules is a rapidly expanding field in chemistry and differs from conventional characterization techniques that require a large number of molecules. One of such form of single-molecule microscopy is high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM), which is especially suitable for coordination compounds because of its atomic number-dependent contrast. However, to date, single-molecule observations using HAADF-STEM has limited to simple planar molecules.

A transition-metal-free controlled polymerization for the attainment of poly(-aryleneethynylene)s is developed. The polymerization of 1-pentafluorophenyl-4-[(trimethylsilyl)ethynyl]benzene with a catalytic amount of fluoride anions proceeds in a chain-growth-like manner to afford polymers with controlled molecular weights and low polydispersity indexes. The mechanism involves a pentacoordinated fluorosilicate as a key intermediate.

We synthesised heteroleptic azadipyrrinato-dipyrrinato hybrid zinc(II) complex 1-Zn-2, by means of the stepwise coordination method. Homoleptic bis(azadipyrrinato)zinc(II) complex 1-Zn-1 was non-fluorescent, whereas 1-Zn-2 exhibited detectable fluorescence from azadipyrrinato ligand 1.
