The phenomenon of sex chromosome loss from hematopoietic cells is an emerging indicator of biological aging. While many methods to detect this loss have been developed, enhancing the field, these existing methods often suffer from being labor-intensive, expensive, and not sufficiently sensitive. To bridge this gap, a novel and more efficient technique is developed, named the SinChro assay.

Various types of hemostatic agents are used to manage bleeding in surgery. Many such agents are animal products, which carry the risk of secondary infection. The aim of this study is to develop a novel hemostatic agent from a non-animal source that quickly stops bleeding, is easy to use, and has no risk of infection.

To evaluate the precision of the wavenumber difference between the two main Raman bands of (designated as , an index of density), we performed theoretical calculations for the uncertainties of the peak positions of the Raman bands, and measured Raman spectra of under the conditions used for the calculations. The precision improves with increased peak intensity, but the peak intensity-precision relation does not hold beyond an intensity threshold corresponding to the measurement time of 1-2 min. Correction for temporal variation of by fitting a linear function to the data distribution improved the precision to ±0.

We measured Raman spectra of N fluids obtained at 0.1-25 MPa at room temperature. The NN peak in the Raman spectrum of a low-pressure N fluid is difficult to detect because of the prevalence of a group of peaks attributed to rotational vibration of N.

The standard treatment for colorectal cancer has always been surgery and chemotherapy, which may be used in combination to treat patients. Immune checkpoint inhibitors have been a significant advancement in the standard treatment of metastatic, unresectable colorectal cancer with deficient mismatch repair. However, little information is available about their use in neoadjuvant and conversion settings with only a few case reports and only one phase 2 trial.

Introduction: The locally advanced pancreatic cancer has been steadily recognized as a potentially curable disease by a combination of chemotherapy and surgery. The remarkable effect of advanced chemotherapy would help surgeons do a function-preserving operation for advanced pancreatic cancer.

Presentation Of Case: A 73-year-old woman presenting with obstructive jaundice was diagnosed to have a 3-cm pancreatic body cancer invading the celiac axis (CA), superior mesenteric artery (SMA), portal/splenic vein confluence, and the common bile duct (CBD).

The short-term outcomes after hepatic vein reconstruction (HVR) were evaluated in 41 patients. HVR can be performed safely using autologous vein graft. HVR can increase the functional remnant liver volume, facilitating parenchyma-sparing one-step hepatectomy as well as expanding resectability even in patients with all major hepatic veins involved.

Hemorrhage due to a ruptured pancreaticoduodenal artery aneurysm is potentially fatal. We describe a case of a 51-year-old man, incidentally diagnosed with an inferior pancreaticoduodenal artery aneurysm associated with probable congenital hypoplasia of the celiac axis and its branches. Considering the rupture risk, we performed an ilio-hepatic artery bypass with an autologous vein graft and aneurysmorrhaphy.

Article Synopsis
  • Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) is a serious liver disease that can progress to severe complications, making accurate diagnosis crucial, particularly in distinguishing it from nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.
  • This study focused on using diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, a non-invasive technique, to assess liver conditions in STAM mice at various developmental stages of liver disease.
  • The findings revealed strong correlations between specific reflectance readings and liver conditions, indicating that this spectroscopy method could be an effective tool for diagnosing NASH and assessing its severity.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the impact of metastases to lymph node #14 (LN#14) on the prognosis of patients with pancreatic head cancer who underwent surgery.
  • Among 99 patients analyzed, those with LN#14 metastasis had a significantly lower median overall survival (10.2 months) compared to those without (31.1 months).
  • The findings suggest that LN#14 metastasis is a critical prognostic indicator, independent of other lymph node metastases, highlighting its potential importance in patient outcomes.

Background: Although liver resection is the only potentially curative treatment for colorectal liver metastases, recurrence is frequent. We previously published the early results of a randomized controlled phase 3 trial showing that adjuvant therapy with uracil-tegafur and leucovorin significantly prolongs recurrence-free survival. This study sought to elucidate the impact of adjuvant chemotherapy on patient survival after an additional follow-up period, building upon the results of our previous study.

Background: A modified Fong clinical score (m-Fong CS) that includes the RAS mutation status has recently been proposed and offered an improved survival stratification of patients who undergo surgery and systemic chemotherapy for colorectal liver metastases (CLM). The aim of this study is to assess whether a CS that includes RAS status is influenced by whether patients receive perioperative chemotherapy.

Methods: We created a new CS using multivariate analysis of data of patients who underwent hepatectomy for CLM for the first time between 2010 and 2016 at a single hospital (n = 341, 79% received perioperative chemotherapy).

Article Synopsis
  • Long-term outcomes for patients with bile duct cancer after surgery are generally poor, especially following tumor recurrence, with current standard treatment being gemcitabine and cisplatin (GC) therapy.
  • A case study of a 65-year-old man showed promising results using carbon ion radiotherapy (CIRT) after initial GC therapy was effective, leading to reduced tumor size and improved survival for extended periods.
  • Despite multiple treatments and temporary stabilization, the patient ultimately experienced tumor regrowth and passed away 81 months post-surgery, highlighting the ongoing challenges in managing advanced bile duct cancer.

Background And Aim: Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) preconditioning drastically augments bactericidal activity but reduces the host inflammatory response. Therefore, it may be beneficial to prevent postoperative infectious complications and mitigate host damage by surgical stress. Considering its clinical application, how LPS preconditioning influences the antitumor effect in the liver is an important issue.

Introduction: Growing evidence indicates the prognostic importance of the crosstalk between cancer cells and stroma through the induction of epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT). This study aimed to clarify the prognostic value of evaluating primary tumor histology with the anatomical extent of disease in patients with colorectal liver metastasis (CRLM).

Methods: Prognostic analyses were performed in 411 CRLM patients who underwent hepatectomy at two institutions.

When pancreatic head cancer invades the superior mesenteric artery (SMA), attempts at curative resection are aborted. Preoperative imaging diagnostics to determine the surgical curability have yet to surpass the intraoperative information acquired via inspection, palpation, and trial dissection. Pancreatoduodenectomy (PD) is a standard measure for treating periampullary cancers.

Mesothelin is expressed in various types of malignant tumors. The present study immunohistochemically investigated mesothelin expression and its clinicopathological significance in each subtype of breast cancer, with special reference to its cellular localization, in particular, membrane mesothelin expression. Using tissue specimens from 482 patients with breast cancer, immunohistochemistry was used to study mesothelin expression and help classify its localization as membrane or cytoplasmic expression.

Background: The TNM (Tumor, Node, Metastasis) classification of the 8th Union for International Cancer Control and the 6th Japanese classification of biliary tract cancer were made on the premise that the prognostic effect of each regional lymph node station is similar. However, some studies have reported different effects of lymph node metastasis location on post-resection prognosis. This study aimed to investigate outcome following radical resection of ampullary carcinoma according to station of lymph node metastasis.
