The extraction of bioactive compounds from cacti using green methods holds promise as an area of research that remains relatively underexplored. This review aims to summarize findings and trends in this field, assessing the effectiveness of green techniques applied to these unique plants. Among the green methods, Ultrasound-Assisted Extraction (UAE) stands out as the most extensively studied, consistently yielding a higher extraction of compounds irrespective of the duration and solvents employed.

This work investigated the peptide profile of skin secretion from Lithobates palmipes collected from the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. The secretion was submitted to reversed phase high-performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC) and the fractions were screened for antibacterial activity. RP-HPLC resulted in the separation of several peaks, among which 10 showed antibacterial activity and contained peptides of the ranatuerin, brevinin and temporin families.

The goal was to provide evidence-based knowledge to inform healthcare practices and policies and promote optimized infant feeding strategies.
Methods: Our study reviewed the relevant literature from May and June 2024, covering the publication period between 2013 and 2024.
Hypercholesterolemia has been associated with cognitive dysfunction and neurodegenerative diseases. Moreover, this metabolic condition disrupts the blood-brain barrier, allowing low-density lipoprotein (LDL) to enter the central nervous system. Thus, we investigated the effects of LDL exposure on mitochondrial function in a mouse hippocampal neuronal cell line (HT-22).

The risk-benefit ratio in some populations remains uncertain, especially in rheumatic heart disease patients. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate the impact of concomitant tricuspid repair on surgical mortality in patients undergoing cardiac surgery due to rheumatic mitral valve disease who have moderate to severe functional tricuspid regurgitation.

Pfaffia glomerata (Spreng.) Pedersen has among its main bioactive compounds saponins, with the phytoestroid β-ecdysone as its chemical marker. In this study, pressurized liquid extraction (PLE), a green extraction technique used to obtain bioactive compounds from plants, was employed to extract beta-ecdysone from P.

Studies on the adverse effects of PrP on plants are incipient and not found for diClPrP. PrP and diClPrP were evaluated at concentrations 4, 40, and 400 µg/L for their phytotoxic potential to seeds of Allium cepa (onion), Cucumis sativus (cucumber), Lycopersicum sculentum (tomato), and Lactuca sativa (lettuce), and cytotoxic, genotoxic potential, and for generating oxygen-reactive substances in root meristems of A.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFAvobenzone (AVO) is a sunscreen with high global production and is constantly released into the environment. Incorporating sewage biosolids for fertilization purposes, the leaching from cultivated soils, and the use of wastewater for irrigation explain its presence in the soil. There is a lack of information about the impact of this sunscreen on plants.

Several types of beetroot-based dietary supplements can be found in markets worldwide; however, ensuring the safety of dietary supplements is a crucial consideration, as there is limited evidence on their safety, especially for older populations. Therefore, the purpose of the current study was to evaluate the safety and tolerability of a nitrate-rich beetroot extract in older participants taking supplements over 12 weeks.

Objective: To carry out a comprehensive description of edentulism estimates by the macro determinants of health in 2000, 2010 and 2019 worldwide.
Methods: This ecological study analyzed data from the Global Burden of Disease Study (GBD) to describe the incidence rate, prevalence rate and years lived with disability (YLDs) rate due to edentulism by macro determinants of health (governance, macroeconomic policy, social policy, public policies, societal values), for 204 countries and territories. The estimates were reported as rates (cases/100,000 people), for people of both sexes aged 55 years or older.
Background: Describe complications and clinical outcomes of heavy silicone oil (HSO) Oxane HD® use as an alternative to overcome the challenges of performing vitrectomy to treat tractional and rhegmatogenous retinal detachments with proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR).
Methods: A retrospective, observational study was performed on patients from one center from August 2014 to Aug 2023. It was included patients who underwent surgery using HSO Oxane HD® to treat rhegmatogenous retinal detachment with PVR or mixed tractional and rhegmatogenous diabetic retinal detachment.
Obesity is a worldwide epidemic, and bariatric surgery has become increasingly popular due to its effectiveness in treating it. Therefore, understanding this area is of paramount importance. This article aims to provide an understanding of the development of the topic related to procedures, content, data, and status.

The foliar application of supplements containing specific nutrients and/or organic molecules such as amino acids can improve sugarcane metabolism, stalk and sugar yields, and the quality of the extracted juice. The present study assessed the effectiveness of the foliar application of an abiotic stress protection complement (ASPC) composed of 18 amino acids and 5 macronutrients.

Cerebral palsy is a neurodevelopmental disease characterized by postural, motor, and cognitive disorders, being one of the main causes of physical and intellectual disability in childhood. To minimize functional impairments, the use of resveratrol as a therapeutic strategy is highlighted due to its neuroprotective and antioxidant effects in different regions of the brain. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the effects of neonatal treatment with resveratrol on postural development, motor function, oxidative balance, and mitochondrial biogenesis in the brain of rats submitted to a cerebral palsy model.

Balloon angioplasty has been used to better appose the flow diverter (FD) to the vessel wall and, thus, improve aneurysm occlusion rates and decrease periprocedural complications. Sparse data are available concerning the results of this technique.
