Effect of photodynamic therapy on the healing of cutaneous third-degree-burn: histological study in rats.

Influence of implant connection type on the biomechanical environment of immediately placed implants - CT-based nonlinear, three-dimensional finite element analysis.

Purpose: The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the biomechanical environment of immediately placed implants, before and after osseointegration, by comparing three different implant-abutment connection types.

Reduction of mercury(II) by tropical river humic substances (Rio Negro) - A possible process of the mercury cycle in Brazil.

The evolution of elemental Hg from its environmental compounds has already been supposed to be an important process within the global mercury cycle. The present study characterizes the abiotic reduction of Hg(II) ions by typical river humic substances (HS) conventionally pre-isolated by the adsorbent XAD 8 from the "Rio Negro" near Manaus, Brazil. For the investigation of this reduction process a special reaction and Hg(0) trapping unit combined with cold-vapor atomic absorption spectrometry (CVAAS) was developed.

Combined molecular diagnosis of B-cell lymphomas with t(11;14)(q13;q32) or t(14;18)(q32;q21) using multiplex- and long distance inverse-polymerase chain reaction.

Translocations t(14;18)(q32;q21) and t(11;14)(q13;q32) are recurrent findings in follicular lymphoma (FL) and mantle cell lymphoma (MCL), respectively. However, the molecular counterparts of these translocations can only be detected in up to 75% of FL and 50% of MCL cases using routine techniques. Dimensional changes in dental arches after treatment with a prefabricated functional appliance.

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of the T4K, a prefabricated functional appliance, on the transverse and anterior-height dimensions of the maxillary and mandibular dental arches. Dimensions before and after treatment were measured on the sample, then, natural growth was subtracted from the treatment effects and compared with twice the error of the method. A clinically significant increase of both dimensions was observed in the maxilla and mandible when Class II malocclusion patients were treated with the T4K.

Clinical features and associated morbidity of scabies in a rural community in Alagoas, Brazil.

Objective: To describe the clinical characteristics of scabies and the associated morbidity in an impoverished rural community in northeast Brazil.

Method: A door-to-door survey was made to examine twice the population of an endemic area; first at the end of the rainy season, and a second time in the dry season 4 months later.

Results: In total, 2005 individuals were examined.

Antinociceptive activity of structural analogues of rotundifolone: structure-activity relationship.

Rotundifolone, a monoterpene isolated from the essential oil of the leaves of Mentha x villosa, is a constituent of several essential oils and known to have antinociceptive activity. Our recent study demonstrated that the analogues of rotundifolone showed also a significant antinociceptive effect. In the present report, to investigate the correlation between the structure and antinociceptive activity, rotundifolone and its analogues were evaluated in the acetic acid-induced writhing test in mice.

Factors leading to long-term hospitalization after laparoscopic appendectomy.

Background: Randomized studies demonstrate that laparoscopic appendectomy yields better results compared with open techniques. We sought to identify factors that determine an extended hospital stay among patients undergoing laparoscopic appendectomy.

Methods: This was a prospective study including 669 patients undergoing laparoscopic appendectomy.

A method to produce evolving functional connectivity maps during the course of an fMRI experiment using wavelet-based time-varying Granger causality.

Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is widely used to identify neural correlates of cognitive tasks. However, the analysis of functional connectivity is crucial to understanding neural dynamics. Although many studies of cerebral circuitry have revealed adaptative behavior, which can change during the course of the experiment, most of contemporary connectivity studies are based on correlational analysis or structural equations analysis, assuming a time-invariant connectivity structure.

Colonic ulcers in propylthiouracil induced vasculitis with secondary antiphospholipid syndrome.

A 48 year old white woman was admitted to the hospital because of several bouts of migratory polyarthritis, weight loss, fever, and abdominal pain over a period of 15 months. She had been taking propylthiouracil 100 mg daily for three years for hyperthyroidism treatment. A test for antineutrophil cytoplasmic autoantibodies (ANCA) was positive with a perinuclear pattern of staining.

Molecular cytogenetic characterization of rearrangements involving 12p in leukemia.

Translocations involving the short arm of chromosome 12 are frequent events among patients with various hematologic malignancies. In approximately half of these patients, fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) analysis has shown that the breakpoints are clustered within the ETS-variant gene 6 (ETV6) at 12p13, leading to its fusion with a variety of partner genes on different chromosomes. The remaining patients have breakpoints centromeric or telomeric to ETV6 or, less frequently, interstitial 12p13 deletions that invariably involve this gene.

Facial nerve repair with epineural suture and anastomosis using fibrin adhesive: an experimental study in the rabbit.

Purpose: An experimental model in rabbits was used to compare epineural suturing and fibrin adhesive anastomosis for facial nerve repair.

Materials And Methods: Thirty-four facial nerves from 17 rabbits were isolated, transected, and anastomosed, with an evaluation of their electrophysiologic and histologic parameters. The rabbits were divided into 2 groups of 5 and 12 animals, respectively: a 10-mm defect was made in the right facial nerve in the first group, with transection and epineural suturing of the left nerve, followed by death after 120 days.

Birth of normal kids after microinjection of pronuclear embryos in a transgenic goat (Capra hircus) production program in Brazil.

This pilot project was designed to determine if normal kids could be produced after microinjection in pronuclear embryos and subsequent transfer to recipients in a transgenic goat program in Brazil. Twelve donors of the Saanen breed and 17 recipients of an undefined breed were used. The estrus of both donors and recipients was synchronized by a standard progestagen treatment and superovulation obtained by six pFSH injections.

Asymptomatic homozygous deletional beta(0)-thalassemia in an African individual.

Homozygosity or compound heterozygosity for beta(0)-thalassemia mutations most commonly results in a transfusion-dependent thalassemia major phenotype. In this report, we describe a 55-year-old male, from Guinea-Bissau, that had been asymptomatic and never transfused until being admitted to hospital with anemia, fever, splenomegaly, and asthenia. Following hospital admission, HIV-2 and Mycobacterium tuberculosis infections were diagnosed, and biochemical and molecular studies revealed homozygosity for beta(0)-thalassemia.

Ethics in sentinel node biopsy in breast cancer: an open question.

The sentinel node concept agrees with the modern principles of surgical oncology in breast cancer, which are related to lymphatic dissection, accurate axillary study, and less traumatic surgery. After publication of many series, it has proven its capacity to correctly stage axilla and select patients who need axillary dissection. The Brazilian Society of Senology established the current norms for its practice.

Calcium salts deposition in rat connective tissue after the implantation of calcium hydroxide-containing sealers.

This study was conducted to observe the rat subcutaneous connective tissue reaction to implanted dentin tubes that were filled with mineral trioxide aggregate, Sealapex, Calciobiotic Root Canal Sealer (CRCS), Sealer 26, and the experimental material, Sealer Plus. The animals were sacrificed after 7 and 30 days, and the specimens were prepared for histological analysis after serial sections with a hard-tissue microtome. The undecalcified sections were examined with polarized light after staining according to the Von Kossa technique for calcium.

Mineral trioxide aggregate repair of lateral root perforations.

This study was conducted to observe the healing process of intentional lateral root perforation repaired with mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA). Forty-eight root canals of dogs' teeth were instrumented and filled. After partial removal of the filling, an intentional perforation was made with a bur in the lateral area of the root.

Effects of Crotalus durissus cascavella venom in the isolated rat kidney.

Crotalus durissus cascavella (C.d.c) is a snake usually found in scrubland of Brazilian Northeast and its bite constitutes an important public health problem.

The Cell-Dyn 3500 is an automated haematology analyzer which quantitatively measures and computes haematological quantities including a full "five-part" white cell differential. It measures 22 parameters for erythrocytes, white blood cells and platelets, also giving the respective histograms. Evaluation of the Cell-Dyn 3500 was performed according to the International Committee for Standardization in Haematology (ICSH) norms, for a period of 5 weeks.

Effect of dentine surface treatment on leakage of root fillings with a glass ionomer sealer.

The purpose of this study was to observe the quality of seal of the glass ionomer cement, Ketac-Endo, after treatment of the root canal wall. The root canals of 140 extracted human teeth were prepared biomechanically. The root canals were treated with either EDTA or received an intracanal dressing of calcium hydroxide or camphorated paramonochlorphenol.

[Assessment of iron requirements during treatment of anemia with recombinant human erythropoietin in patients with chronic renal insufficiency under hemodialysis].

Iron deficiency occurs often in patients with recombinant human Erythropoietin (rhEPO) therapy in chronic renal failure (CRF) associated anemia. We have studied 10 patients with CRF on regular hemodialysis (HD), female = 8, male = 2, average age = 49 [32 to 72], time on HD 44.2 +/- 25.
