Distinct mechanisms control the timing of differentiation of two myeloid populations in Xenopus ventral blood islands.

Previous study has suggested that distinct populations of myeloid cells exist in the anterior ventral blood islands (aVBI) and posterior ventral blood islands (pVBI) in Xenopus neurula embryo. However, details for differentiation programs of these two populations have not been elucidated. In the present study, we examined the role of Wnt, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and fibroblast growth factor signals in the regulation of myeloid cell differentiation in the dorsal marginal zone and ventral marginal zone explants that are the sources of myeloid cells in the aVBI and pVBI.

A novel approach for a toxicity prediction model of environmental pollutants by using a quantitative structure-activity relationship method based on toxicogenomics.

The development of automobile emission reduction technologies has decreased dramatically the particle concentration in emissions; however, there is a possibility that unexpected harmful chemicals are formed in emissions due to new technologies and fuels. Therefore, we attempted to develop new and efficient toxicity prediction models for the myriad environmental pollutants including those in automobile emissions. We chose 54 compounds related to engine exhaust and, by use of the DNA microarray, examined their effect on gene expression in human lung cells.

Spatiotemporal changes of coxsackievirus and adenovirus receptor in rat hearts during postnatal development and in cultured cardiomyocytes of neonatal rat.

Coxsackievirus B is the most common cause of viral myocarditis and is particularly virulent in neonates and children. Adenovirus is also a leading cause of the disease. The determinant of tropism for both viruses is considered to be the expression of coxsackievirus and adenovirus receptor (CAR) in target organs.
