Combined Effects of Chronic Kidney Disease and Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease on the Risk of Cardiovascular Disease in Patients with Diabetes.

Background: We investigated the combined effect of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) on the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in patients with type 2 diabetes.

Methods: Data were obtained from the Korean National Health Insurance Service. Patients with diabetes who participated in health screenings from 2009 to 2011 were included.

Although the relationship between NAFLD and colorectal adenomas has been suggested, the effect of MAFLD on colorectal adenoma has yet to be investigated.

Medication-related osteonecrosis of the maxilla: Prognosis of oral surgery combined with endoscopic sinus surgery.

Objectives: To evaluate the effect of functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) on the resolution of maxillary medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ).

Patients And Methods: This study included 62 patients diagnosed with MRONJ in the maxillary posterior area with or without maxillary sinusitis (MS). All patients underwent oral surgery.

Purpose: We aimed to evaluate the recurrence rate of colorectal neoplasia showing histologic lateral margin involvement after en bloc endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD).

Methods: We reviewed 527 colorectal lesions that were removed by en bloc ESD from 2005 to 2013 and followed by endoscopy. Based on the postprocedural pathologic reports, the lesions were categorized as follows: lesions with clear deep and positive lateral margins (n = 63) and lesions with R0 resection (n = 299).

Single Balloon Enteroscopy-Assisted Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography in Patients Who Underwent a Gastrectomy with Roux-en-Y Anastomosis: Six Cases from a Single Center.

Patients with altered anatomy such as a Roux-en-Y anastomosis often present with various pancreaticobiliary problems requiring therapeutic intervention. However, a conventional endoscopic approach to the papilla is very difficult owing to the long afferent limb and acute angle of a Roux-en-Y anastomosis. Balloon-assisted enteroscopy can be used for endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) in patients with altered anatomy.

The clinical usefulness of endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration and biopsy for rectal and perirectal lesions.

Background/aims: Endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration and/or biopsy (EUS-FNA/B) have been used to diagnose subepithelial tumors (SETs) and extraluminal lesions in the gastrointestinal tract. Our group previously reported the usefulness of EUS-FNA/B for rectal and perirectal lesions. This study reports our expanded experience with EUS-FNA/B for rectal and perirectal lesions in terms of diagnostic accuracy and safety.

An unusual abscess formation in the masticator space after acupressure massage: a case report.

Clinical features of masticator-space abscess (MSA) are very similar to those of parotitis or temporomandibular disorder (TMD), making early differential diagnosis difficult. Local causes of MSA include nerve block anesthesia, infection after tooth extraction, and trauma to the temporomandibular joint (TMJ); the systemic cause is immunodeficiency. Odontogenic causes account for most etiologies, but there are also unusual causes of MSA.

Treatment of extensive comminuted mandibular fracture between both mandibular angles with bilateral condylar fractures using a reconstruction plate: a case report.

This following case report describes the open reduction, internal fixation and the reconstruction of an extensive comminuted mandibular fracture with bilateral condylar fractures in a 19-year-old male patient with an intellectual disability and autistic disorder. He suffered fall trauma, resulting in shattered bony fragments of the alveolus and mandibular body between both mandibular rami, the fracture of both condyles and the avulsion or dislocation of every posterior tooth of the mandible. The patient underwent open reduction and internal fixation between both mandibular rami using a reconstruction plate, open reduction and internal fixation of the shattered fragments using miniplates and screws, and the closed reduction of the bilateral condylar fractures.

Exogenous γ-tocotrienol promotes preimplantation development and improves the quality of porcine embryos.

γ-tocotrienol (GTT), an isomer of vitamin E, has been the subject of increasing interest due to its strong anti-oxidant effects. Therefore, in this study, the effects of GTT on blastocyst development, expression levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and apoptotic index were investigated in preimplantation porcine embryos. After in vitro maturation and fertilisation, porcine embryos were cultured for 6 days in porcine zygote medium 3 supplemented with or without GTT (200μM) under oxidative stress conditions (200μM hydrogen peroxide (H2O2)).
