Generalized low bone mass and osteopenia in both axial and peripheral skeleton in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) have been reported in literature. However, the exact mechanisms and causes of the bone loss in AIS are not identified yet. Therefore, this study examined the relationship between serum concentration of soluble receptor activator of nuclear factor-kappaB ligand (RANKL), serum level of osteoprotegerin (OPG) and bone mass in 72 patients with AIS and compared to those of 64 age- and gender-matched healthy controls.

Docetaxel has shown promising activity against this disease. In this study, we explored the efficacy and safety of docetaxel monotherapy as salvage chemotherapy in AGC after F and P combination chemotherapy failed.

Background: Incadronate has been found to lessen the increase in corrected serum calcium levels in malignancy-associated hypercalcemia (MAH) in a Phase III study in Japan. The drug is currently used to treat MAH in Japan.
The patterns of food intake change which are effective for weight loss have not been clearly researched yet. The objective of this study was to examine the correlation between food intake change patterns and body weight loss. One hundred and two overweight women completed a 2-day dietary record before and after a 12-week weight-reduction program, and 28 food groups were classified.

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of ginseng saponin mRg2, a mixture of ginsenosides containing 60% Rg2, on the repair and apoptosis of ultraviolet B (UVB)-exposed NIH3T3 cells. When cells were exposed to UVB and then incubated with normal growth medium for 48 h, cell viability, as determined by trypan blue exclusion assay decreased to about 25%.

Methods: Patients with stage IB, II, or IIIA NSCLC were given three cycles of chemotherapy followed by tumor resection. Each 21-day cycle consisted of gemcitabine 1000 mg/m on days 1 and 8, carboplatin AUC 5 on day 1, and paclitaxel 175 mg/m on day 1.
Goals Of Work: Fatigue is highly prevalent in cancer and greatly inferences with daily life. The goal of this study was to identify the most informative score in the Brief Fatigue Inventory and to define cut points for "mild," "moderate," and "severe" fatigue based on their relevance to quality of life (QOL).
Patients And Methods: We surveyed cancer patients at five hospitals in Korea with self-administrated questionnaires.
Background: The effect of the recent obesity epidemic on body composition remains unknown. Furthermore, age-related changes in body composition are still unclear.
Objective: The objective was to simultaneously examine the effects of birth cohort and age on body composition.
Background: The efficacy and safety of the combination of capecitabine (X) and cisplatin (P) in the treatment of advanced gastric cancer (AGC) have already been shown in several prospective clinical trials. In this study, we sought to evaluate the efficacy and feasibility of the XP combination for the treatment of AGC in clinical practice and to determine the prognostic factors affecting treatment outcomes.
Methods: Clinical data from 223 patients with previously untreated metastatic, unresectable, or recurrent gastric carcinoma who were treated with XP between March 2000 and December 2004 at a single center were reviewed.
Purpose: To determine and predict P-glycoprotein (Pgp) and multidrug-resistance-related protein (MRP) expression in untreated breast cancer patients by visual and quantitative indices of double-phase (99m)Tc MIBI scintimammography (DSMM).
Patients And Methods: Eighty-two patients with untreated breast cancer received DSMM. Pgp and MRP expression was assessed by immunohistochemical (IHC) staining of surgical specimens.
Heparin conjugated amphiphilic block copolymer, Tetronic-PCL-heparin (TCH), was developed and its polymeric micelles (PMs) were prepared as an injectable vehicle for long-term delivery of bFGF, which is one of the heparin-binding growth factors (HBGF). TCH PMs were fabricated by a single emulsion and solvent evaporation method. The structural properties of TCH were confirmed by (1)H NMR, FT-IR and GPC.

Methods: Two regions were selected as high and low walkable regions on the basis of differences in their residential density, mixed land use and street connectivity. The subjects in this study were participants in a health promotion program focused on walking sponsored by local governments.
A 36 kDa extracellular metalloprotease (designated to as vEP-MO6) was purified and characterized from Vibrio vulnificus sp. strain MO6 24/0. vEP-MO6 cleaved azocasein and a few other proteins such as prothrombin, plasminogen, fibrinogen and Factor Xa, which are associated with the blood coagulation pathway.

The sigma and pi structures of these complexes are predicted by MP2 calculations, but only the sigma structures are identified by the experimental measurements. For these sigma structures, adiabatic ionization energies and several vibrational frequencies are measured from the ZEKE spectra, the ground electronic states of the neutral and ionized complexes are determined by comparing the observed and calculated spectra, and the metal-ligand bond dissociation energies of the neutral states are derived by using a thermochemical relation.

Porcine RANTES cDNA was successfully cloned from aortic endothelial cells of miniature pigs, and its protein expression was induced by transfection. Its deduced amino acid sequence was 83.

CS-F2 showed marked inhibitory activity against the pathogen-mediated hemagglutination with a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) between 0.01 and 0.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFA comparative global proteomic screen identified factors required for COMPASS (complex of proteins associated with Set1)-mediated mono-, di-, and trimethylation of the fourth lysine of histone H3 (H3K4), which included components of a cyclin-dependent protein kinase (Ctk complex) that phosphorylates the C-terminal domain of the largest subunit of RNA polymerase II (Pol II). Our results indicate that histone H3K4 methylation levels are regulated by the Ctk1, Ctk2, and Ctk3 components of the Ctk complex. We show that loss of Ctk1 kinase activity results in reduced histone H3K4 monomethylation levels, followed by a global increase in histone H3K4 trimethylation levels on chromatin.

To investigate the effect of Pro --> peptoid residue substitution on cell selectivity and the mechanism of antibacterial action of Pro-containing beta-turn antimicrobial peptides, we synthesized tritrpticin-amide (TP, VRRFPWWWPFLRR-NH(2)) and its peptoid residue-substituted peptides in which two Pro residues at positions 5 and 9 are replaced with Nleu (Leu peptoid residue), Nphe (Phe peptoid residue), or Nlys (Lys peptoid residue). Peptides with Pro --> Nphe (TPf) or Pro --> Nleu substitution (TPl) retained antibacterial activity but had significantly higher toxicity to mammalian cells. In contrast, Pro --> Nlys substitution (TPk) increased the antibacterial activity but decreased the toxicity to mammalian cells.

When the pleural effusion is caused by leukemic pleural infiltration, the differential white blood cell count of the effusion is identical to that of the peripheral blood, and the fluid cytology reveals leukemic blasts. We report here a case of bilateral pleural involvement of atypical CML in an 83-yr old male diagnosed with pancreatic cancer with abdominal wall metastasis and incidental peripheral leukocytosis.
