Most recent clinical practice guidelines addressing the management of infantile hemangiomas (IHs) recommend oral propranolol, a non-selective beta-adrenergic antagonist, as first-line treatment. However, few reports have provided continuous follow-up data regarding cardiac evaluations. Sixty-four patients diagnosed with IHs and treated with oral propranolol before 2 years of age at the Department of Pediatrics, Kangbuk Samsung Hospital (Seoul, Republic of Korea), with regular examinations between 2017 and 2021, were included.

  • Hereditary hemolytic anemia (HHA) is a rare group of blood disorders in Korea, linked to ethnic diversity and diagnostic challenges, which have grown due to international marriages and heightened awareness.
  • Recent advancements in diagnostic techniques, especially next-generation sequencing, have improved the diagnosis of RBC enzymopathy and other HHA-related conditions.
  • The Korean Society of Hematology has developed and updated guidelines emphasizing the use of next-generation sequencing for initial diagnostics, which is critical for effectively managing and treating patients with HHA.

Background: Triptorelin, a long-acting gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) agonist, is available in 1-, 3-, and 6-month formulations to treat central precocious puberty (CPP). The triptorelin pamoate 22.5-mg 6-month formulation recently approved for CPP offers greater convenience to children by reducing the injection frequency.

Purpose: Renal tumors account for approximately 7% of all childhood cancers. These include Wilms tumor (WT), clear cell sarcoma of the kidney (CCSK), malignant rhabdoid tumor of the kidney (MRTK), renal cell carcinoma (RCC), congenital mesoblastic nephroma (CMN) and other rare tumors. We investigated the epidemiology of pediatric renal tumors in Korea.

Although the prevalence of hereditary hemolytic anemia (HHA) is relatively low in Korea, it has been gradually increasing in recent decades due to increment in the proportions of hemoglobinopathies from immigrants of South East Asia, raising awareness of the disease among clinicians, and advances in diagnostic technology. As such, the red blood cell (RBC) Disorder Working Party (WP), previously called HHA WP, of the Korean Society of Hematology (KSH) developed the Korean Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for the diagnosis of HHA in 2007. These SOPs have been continuously revised and updated following advances in diagnostic technology [e.

  • The study addressed the challenges of diagnosing inherited platelet function disorders (IPFDs) in Korea due to lack of available testing methods.
  • Conducted by the Korean Pediatric Hematology Oncology Group, researchers used next-generation sequencing (NGS) to identify genetic variants in patients suspected of having IPFDs from March 2017 to December 2020.
  • Among 11 patients, 10 were diagnosed with Glanzmann thrombasthenia (GT), revealing both known and novel genetic variants, while one patient had platelet type bleeding disorder 18 with newly identified variants.

Update on infantile hemangioma.

Clin Exp Pediatr

November 2021

The International Society for the Study of Vascular Anomalies classifies vascular anomalies into vascular tumors and vascular malformations. Vascular tumors are neoplasms of endothelial cells, among which infantile hemangiomas (IHs) are the most common, occurring in 5%-10% of infants. Glucose transporter-1 protein expression in IHs differs from that of other vascular tumors or vascular malformations.

Background: Anemia is associated with high morbidity and mortality in older people. However, the prevalence and characteristics of anemia in older individuals are not fully understood, and national data on these aspects in older Korean adults are lacking. This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence and characteristics of anemia in older adults using data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES), which is a nationwide cross-sectional epidemiological study conducted by the Korean Ministry of Health and Welfare.

Since mid-April 2020, cases of multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) associated with coronavirus disease 2019 that mimics Kawasaki disease (KD) have been reported in Europe and North America. However, no cases have been reported in Korea. We describe an 11-year old boy with fever, abdominal pain, and diarrhea who developed hypotension requiring inotropes in intensive care unit.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigated changes in sensitization rates for common airborne allergens in Korean children over a decade, focusing on the impact of climate and lifestyle changes.
  • - A total of 4,493 children with allergic rhinitis or asthma were examined, revealing that the sensitization rates for tree pollen, weed pollen, dog and cat dander significantly rose from 2009 to 2018.
  • - The findings indicate that children sensitized to one allergen are more likely to be sensitized to others, highlighting an increase in overall allergen sensitivity among the population studied.

  • Hereditary hemolytic anemia (HHA) is a rare condition marked by early breakdown of red blood cells, and a study aimed to examine its prevalence in Korea from 2007 to 2016.
  • Data was collected from 369 children with HHA across multiple hospitals, revealing that the majority had RBC membranopathies, with significant increases in hemoglobinopathies and RBC enzymopathies compared to a previous decade.
  • The study noted an uptick in thalassemia traits, linked to greater awareness and international marriages, while emphasizing the need to improve diagnostic access for the 6.5% of patients without a clear diagnosis.

  • Oral propranolol is the primary treatment for infantile hemangiomas (IH), and this study aimed to identify key cytokines affecting IH biology and indicators of regression after treatment.
  • Out of 49 patients under 1 year old with IH, 33 completed a year of propranolol therapy, showing a decrease in certain cytokines (MMP-2, bFGF, VEGF-α, MCP-1) that correlated with the lesions regressing.
  • The research suggests that monitoring cytokine levels, especially bFGF and VEGF before treatment, could be useful in predicting how well a patient will respond to propranolol.

  • The study aimed to investigate whether breastfeeding protects against acute pyelonephritis (APN) in infants under 6 months, while assessing other factors like sex, age, delivery method, and birth weight.
  • Infants fed only formula showed a significantly increased risk for APN compared to those who were breastfed or mixed-fed, highlighting breastfeeding's protective role.
  • Additionally, factors such as being a firstborn, having a higher birth weight, and being born vaginally were associated with a lower risk of APN, while low birth weight and caesarean delivery increased the risk.

Background: Current diagnostic tests for hereditary spherocytosis (HS) focus on the detection of hemolysis or indirectly assessing defects of membrane protein, whereas direct methods to detect protein defects are complicated and difficult to implement. In the present study, we investigated the patterns of genetic variation associated with HS among patients clinically diagnosed with HS.

Methods: Multi-gene targeted sequencing of 43 genes (17 RBC membrane protein-encoding genes, 20 RBC enzyme-encoding genes, and six additional genes for the differential diagnosis) was performed using the Illumina HiSeq platform.

Although chebulic acid isolated from has diverse biological effects, its effects on the expression of nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) and the expression of downstream genes have not been elucidated. The purpose of this research is to investigate the hepatoprotective mechanism of chebulic acid against oxidative stress produced by -butyl hydroperoxide (-BHP) in liver cells. The treatment with chebulic acid attenuated cell death in -BHP-induced HepG2 liver cells and increased intracellular glutathione content, upregulated the activity of heme oxygenase-1, and also increased the translocation of Nrf2 into the nucleus and Nrf2 target gene expression in a dose-dependent manner.
