Outcomes of Aromatherapy in Nausea and Vomiting After Total Knee Arthroplasty.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to assess the effectiveness of aromatherapy for postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) after total knee arthroplasty (TKA) under spinal anesthesia.

Design: Prospective randomized four-arm placebo-controlled trials METHODS: One hundred and twenty subjects were allocated to each of the four groups based on the application of aromatic oil in subjects manifesting PONV: group 1 (lavender), group 2 (lemon), group 3 (peppermint), and group 4 (normal saline placebo). Aromatherapy was administered to all subjects immediately after surgery.

Prevalence of Adrenal Insufficiency in Korean Patients undergoing Total Knee Arthroplasty.

Background: This study investigated the prevalence of adrenal insufficiency among patients admitted for total knee arthroplasty (TKA) due to osteoarthritis and identified factors contributing to adrenal insufficiency.

Methods: We divided the patients into two groups based on the results of preoperative standard-dose short synchronous stimulation tests: group 1 (adrenal insufficiency) and group 2 (normal adrenal function). We also assessed the prevalence of adrenal insufficiency and compared the numbers of patients who received oral steroids, the frequency of previous steroid injection use, and the frequency of systemic symptoms of steroid depletion such as fatigue and loss of appetite between the two groups.

Key Clinical Message: Intraosseous epidermoid cysts in this report were related to a previous injury. A careful history taking is necessary to make a correct impression on the lesion. Definite diagnosis is made by histologic study.

Outcomes of cruciate-retaining total knee arthroplasty for osteoarthritis with severe varus deformity.

Background: Varus deformity is common in osteoarthritic knee. The purpose of this study was to investigate the clinical and radiographic outcomes after cruciate-retaining (CR) total knee arthroplasty (TKA) for severely varus osteoarthritic knees and compare them to those of mildly to moderately deformed osteoarthritic knees.

Methods: Eight hundred ninety-four subjects were undergone CR TKA, 137 had severe varus deformity (group 1), and 757 had mild-to-moderate deformity (group 2) of the lower limb preoperatively.

Combined type of nodular and diffuse forms of pigmented villonodular synovitis in a single knee joint of a child.

There are two types of pigmented villonodular synovitis (PVNS), nodular and diffuse. Two types generally do not coexist, and only one type usually occurs. This report presents a rare case of 12-year-old boy with combined type of PVNS in the knee joint who was treated arthroscopically.

Genotoxicity and subchronic general toxicity assessments of Lactobacillus curvatus WiKim 38 using Sprague-Dawley rats.

Lactobacillus curvatus WiKim 38 (LCW), isolated from kimchi, has shown novel immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory properties. In the present study, to obtain data on the safety of LCW, we performed three genotoxicity (bacterial reverse mutation, chromosome aberration, and micronucleus) and two general toxicity (single-dosing and 13-week repeated-dosing) studies. In the genotoxicity assessment, LCW showed no increased reverse mutation for 4 strains of Salmonella typhimurium and a strain of Escherichia coli.

Intraoperative patellar maltracking and postoperative radiographic patellar malalignment were more frequent in cases of complete medial collateral ligament release in cruciate-retaining total knee arthroplasty.

Background: Patellar maltracking after total knee arthroplasty (TKA) can lead to significant patellofemoral complications such as anterior knee pain, increased component wear, and a higher risk of component loosening, patellar fracture, and instability. This study was to investigate the preoperative and operative variables that significantly affect patellar tracking after cruciate-retaining TKA.

Methods: We studied 142 knee joints in patients who had undergone TKA: the knees were dichotomized based on postoperative patellar tracking, which was evaluated on patellar skyline, axial-projection radiographs: group 1, normal patellar tracking (lateral tilt ≤ 10° and displacement ≤ 3 mm) and group 2, patellar maltracking (lateral tilt > 10° or displacement > 3 mm).

Purpose: To compare side-to-side difference (SSD) of anterior tibial translation in instrumented stress radiography for each series of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL)-injured subjects according to knee flexion angle.

Methods: Forty subjects who were suspected of having significant ACL injury by manual Lachman test and MRI were recruited for this prospective study. These subjects took stress radiographs for both knees with corresponding knee flexion of 10° (series M1) and 30° (series M2) using Telos stress device.

Here, we investigated the effects of dermal exposure to PFOA and SC PFCAs using in vitro and in vivo models.

White-spotted flower chafer () is an edible insect and its larva was used as a traditional Asian medicine. It's a promising material as a novel food source because of its nutritional components. In this study, as part of the preclinical toxicity program, we evaluated the toxicity of freeze-dried larva powder to develop a novel food material.

Osteonecrosis of bipartite patella following total knee arthroplasty without lateral release.

We present a case of osteonecrosis of bipartite patella occurring after total knee arthroplasty using medial parapatellar approach without lateral retinacular release in osteoarthritic knee of a 66 year-old-male. The surgery was performed using traditional technique with medial parapatellar approach and patella was resurfaced. Patella was everted during surgery.

Background: Health literacy is the ability to obtain, process, and understand health information needed to make appropriate health decisions. The proper comprehension by patients regarding a given disease, its treatment, and the physician's instructions plays an important role in shared decision-making. Studies have disagreed over the degree to which differences in health literacy affect patients' preferences for shared decision-making; we therefore sought to evaluate this in the context of shared decision-making about carpal tunnel release.

Individuals with limited health literacy (HL) are less likely to obtain preventive care. We designed a study to compare adherence to weekly oral and quarterly intravenous bisphosphonates among patients with low HL. The study enrolled a total of 432 female patients who presented with a distal radius fracture caused by low-energy trauma.

Effect of Metabolic Syndrome on the Functional Outcome of Corticosteroid Injection for Lateral Epicondylitis: Retrospective Matched Case-Control Study.

Both obesity and diabetes mellitus are well-known risk factors for tendinopathies. We retrospectively compared the efficacy of single corticosteroid injections in treating lateral epicondylitis in patients with and without metabolic syndrome (MetS). Fifty-one patients with lateral epicondylitis and MetS were age- and sex-matched with 51 controls without MetS.

One-Year Serial Follow-up Magnetic Resonance Imaging Study of RigidFix for Femoral Fixation in Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction.

Purpose: To assess graft slippage at the site of femoral fixation by follow-up magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) after anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction with a four-strand autogenous hamstring tendon using RigidFix (DePuy Mitek).

Materials And Methods: Twenty-one subjects diagnosed with ACL rupture underwent ACL reconstruction using hamstring autograft with the transtibial technique. RigidFix was used for femoral fixation and Intrafix and washer screw were used for tibial fixation.

Focal Eosinophilic Myositis of the Hand Presenting as a Refractory Pyogenic Infection.

Eosinophilic myositis is a rare disorder in which eosinophils infiltrate muscle and supporting connective tissue structures. The disorder can be localized or diffuse, and it may be associated with various systemic features resembling autoimmune disease. Focal eosinophilic myositis is the most limited form of eosinophilic myositis, for which muscle involvement is generally limited to the lower extremity.

Effect of health literacy on adherence to osteoporosis treatment among patients with distal radius fracture.

Unlabelled: Patients with inadequate health literacy, those with medical comorbidities, or those with a previous history of adverse drug events have a higher likelihood of non-adherence to osteoporosis treatment after sustaining a distal radius fracture.

Introduction: Patients with a distal radial fracture (DRF) have a higher risk of subsequent fractures, which provides an important opportunity to begin treatment for osteoporosis. This study assessed the effect that health literacy of patients suffering from a DRF has on the subsequent adherence to osteoporosis treatment.

Effect of low appendicular lean mass, grip strength, and gait speed on the functional outcome after surgery for distal radius fractures.

Is Intraoperative Use of QuikClot Combat Gauze Effective for Hemostasis after Total Knee Arthroplasty?

Background: To assess the hemostatic effect of QuikClot Combat Gauze (QCG) compared to that of standard gauze during cruciate-retaining total knee arthroplasty (TKA).

Methods: Sixty knees underwent TKA using a pneumatic tourniquet in this prospective randomized study. After implantation of the femoral and tibial components and hardening of the bone cement, the tourniquet was deflated and QCG (group 1) or standard gauze (group 2) was packed into the joint cavity for 5 minutes for hemostasis.
