Curcumin solid dispersions were prepared using hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) to enhance water solubility of curcumin. The particle size of curcumin solid dispersions was in range from 371 to 528 nm and particles were shaped as spherical with wrinkles. The encapsulation efficiency was over 93% for all samples, and water solubility of curcumin was significantly improved to 238 µg/mL when the ratio of curcumin to HPMC was 20:80.

Behavior of silica nanoparticles (SiNPs) in sweet basil was studied using laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectroscopy (LA-ICP-MS) as an in situ monitoring tool. Although the use of SiNP for environmental applications is interesting, detailed studies in plants for distributional mapping and quantitative determination have been difficult because the detection of Si suffers from severe molecular interference and high background in ICP-MS. In this work, yttrium/fluorescein-isothiocyanate-doped silica nanoparticles (Y/FITC-doped SiNPs) synthesized in our lab were used to substitute for undoped SiNP, allowing the doped Y to be monitored instead of Si, while retaining the same surface properties.

Unlabelled: This study investigates the potential complications in applying nanoclay-based waterborne coating to packaging films for food with high moisture content. Quantitative elemental mapping of metallic pollutants in sweet basil was studied by laser ablation (LA)-ICP-MS. We developed a colorimetric sensor array (CSA) that is sensitive to highly contributory volatile compounds of coffee aroma for discrimination of coffee samples roasted to different roast degrees. Strecker aldehydes and α-diketones were significantly higher for the medium roast than the other roast degrees. The development of several sulfur compounds was pronounced in the medium-dark and dark roasts, except for dimethyl sulfide, which was only detected in the light roast.

Metal-doped inorganic nanoparticles were synthesized for the multiplex detection of biomarkers by a sandwich-type inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) immunoassay. The synthesized Cs-doped multicore magnetic nanoparticles (MMNPs) were used not only for magnetic extraction of targets but also for ratiometric measurement in ICP-MS. In addition, three different metal/dye-doped silica nanoparticles (SNPs) were synthesized as probes for multiplex detection: Y/RhBITC (rhodamine B isothiocyanate)-doped SNPs for CRP (cardiovascular disease), Cd/RhBITC-doped SNPs for AFP (tumor), and Au/5(6)-XRITC (X-rhodamine-5-(and-6)-isothiocyanate)-doped SNPs for NSE (heart disease).

Unlabelled: Beeswax and a plasticizer (ATBC) were added to polylactic acid (PLA) films in order to enhance the water vapor barrier properties of the films. Beeswax improved the barrier properties; the water vapor permeability in the composite containing 1% beeswax was 58% lower than that of the neat PLA. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that the incorporation of beeswax and ATBC had so little effect on the PLA structure.

Acrylic acid monomer in a viscous supporting nylon solution was polymerized and fabricated simultaneously via an electrospinning process.
