Background: Obesity has become a global health concern, with its prevalence steadily rising across populations. Apart from its well-known association with various metabolic disorders, obesity has also been linked to an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases, including myocardial ischemia-reperfusion (IR) injury. This study aimed to assess how irisin and liraglutide, when used together, impact endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress-induced apoptosis and PI3K/AKT signaling in obese rats after cardiac IR injury.

Ageing in the digital age: what drives virtual reality technology adoption among older adults?

In a rapidly ageing population, virtual reality (VR) technology is emerging as a useful tool to meet the increasing demands for medical health, social interaction and entertainment for older adults. This study explores the factors influencing the acceptance of VR technology among older adults to boost their VR use. The acceptance model of VR technology among older adults was founded on the technology acceptance model and incorporated personal factors such as self-efficacy (SE), technology anxiety (TA), perceived enjoyment (PE) and self-satisfaction (SS).

Granulocyte colony-stimulating factor combined with SOFA score for mortality prediction in patients with sepsis.

Background: Sepsis in emergency departments is a prevalent occurrence characterized by high hospitalization rate and mortality. The granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) is an indicator for identifying patients with sepsis.

Methods: A total of 171 patients with sepsis were included in our study who were admitted to the emergency department of Beijing Chaoyang Hospital affiliated with Capital Medical University from October 2020 to April 2021.

The combination of doxorubicin (Dox) and glycyrrhetinic acid (GA) has been widely explored for treating various cancers, while the heterogeneous distribution, uncontrolled release and acid tumor microenvironment often hinder their synergistic effects. Herein, we introduce an acid/glutathione (GSH)-dual responsive nano-prodrug (AS1411@Dox+GA/NPs) enabling precise co-delivery of Dox and GA for enhanced combination therapy. The GSH-activated Dox prodrug [Poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid)-disulfide-Dox, PLGA-ss-Dox], GA, and sulfur-terminated D-α-tocopherol polyethylene glycol succinate (TPGS-SH) are combined to form a nanoemulsion with sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO) in the aqueous phase.

Background: Both insufficient physical activity (PA) and excess body weight are important risk factors for cardiovascular disease (CVD), and PA is closely related to body weight. However, it remains unclear whether PA modifies or mediates the association of body mass index (BMI) with CVD.

Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study of 35,406 adults participating in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES).

Metabolomic insights into pathogenesis and therapeutic potential in adult acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) poses challenges in adult patients, considering its heterogeneous nature and often suboptimal treatment outcomes. Here, we performed a study on 201 newly diagnosed adult ALL cases (age ≥ 15 y) to generate intracellular and dynamic serum metabolomic profiles. Our findings revealed a predominant increase in bile acid (BA) metabolites in serum, alongside metabolic rewiring that supported highly proliferative states and actively metabolic signaling, such as enriched nucleotide metabolism in leukemic blasts.

Methods: Two experiments with 61 participants assessed anticipation in soccer, comparing genuine and deceptive dribbling actions. Study 1 lacked prior information; study 2 incorporated it.

Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the dose-response relationship between different exercise types and the alleviation of motor symptoms in Parkinson's Disease patients.

Design: A systematic review and network meta-analysis were conducted to compare the effects of 12 exercise types on motor symptoms in Parkinson's Disease patients using randomized controlled trials.

Methods: A systematic search was conducted across PubMed, Medline, Embase, PsycINFO, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science until September 10, 2024.

Background: Whole exome sequencing (WES) technology has been increasingly used for the etiological diagnosis of fetuses with ultrasound anomalies. In this article, we report a novel deletion compound combined with a causative variant in gene leading to short-rib thoracic dysplasia 7 (SRTD7) with or without polydactyly using WES.

Methods: This study involved a Chinese fetus with clinical features of skeletal dysplasia on ultrasound imaging, in whom chromosome abnormalities and copy number variants (CNVs) were detected by chromosomal microarray analysis (CMA), and sequence variants were detected by WES.

Association between moderate-to-vigorous physical activity trajectories and academic achievement in Chinese primary school children: a 3-year longitudinal study.

Background: Past cross-sectional studies have reported a positive association between moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) and academic achievement in children and adolescents. Despite this, the influence of variations in MVPA over time on academic achievement remains yet to be definitively understood. Therefore, this study aims to track the patterns of MVPA and examine how they are associated with academic achievement over a three-year period among Chinese primary school students.

Depressive intensity, duration, and their associations with cognitive decline: a population-based study in Korea.

Existing epidemiological studies have ignored the effect of depressive duration on cognitive decline despite the presence of biological cues and understudied the depression-cognition association in Asian countries in the context of increasing cognitive burden worldwide. We aimed to comprehensively characterize the effects of depressive duration and intensity on cognitive decline at the population level. A total of 6406 individuals from the Korean Longitudinal Study of Aging (KLoSA) from 2010 to 2018 were included to generate four datasets with durations of 2, 4, 6, and 8 years.

Objective: Cancer survivors often face significant health-related quality of life (HRQoL) challenges. Although exercise has been proven to improve HRQoL in cancer survivors, the optimal dose and intensity of exercise for this population has not been fully determined. Adherence to exercise may vary based on exercise intensity, affecting results.

Association Between Multimorbidity and Depression in Older Adults: Evidence From Six Large Longitudinal Cohorts.

Background: Multimorbidity may increase the risk of depression in older adults, but the global average effect of multimorbidity on depression remains unknown. This research aimed to exclude the regional heterogeneity to quantify the exposure-response association between multimorbidity and depression in older adults worldwide.

Method: We collected 23,947 participants aged 65 years or above from six large prospective cohorts from developed and developing countries, including Mexico, South Korea, Europe, America, China, and England.

Sarcopenic obesity was defined following the 2022 consensus by ESPEN and EASO.

Objective: To evaluate and predict adverse outcomes associated with serum Syndecan-1 (SYN-1) levels in patients with early sepsis, and to explore the prognostic risk factors in sepsis and septic shock.

Methods: This retrospective single-center observational study included 168 sepsis patients admitted to the Emergency Department of Beijing Chao-Yang Hospital Shijingshan Branch, Capital Medical University, from October 2020 to October 2021. Patients were categorized into sepsis (n=114) and septic shock (n=54) groups based on Sepsis 3.
