Background: Ferroptosis is a recently studied form of programmed cell death characterized by lipid peroxides accumulation in the cells. This process occurs when a cell's antioxidant capacity is disturbed resulting in the inability of the cell to detoxify the toxic peroxides. Two major components that regulate ferroptosis are cysteine and iron.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates a process called Adherent-to-Suspension Transition (AST), which allows solid tumor cells to change from being anchored in place to becoming circulating tumor cells (CTCs) that can spread throughout the body, leading to metastasis.
  • - Researchers analyzed various breast cancer and melanoma models, using single-cell RNA sequencing and other techniques to understand how AST factors reprogram these cells, making them more resistant to stress and helping them detach from primary tumors.
  • - They found that blocking AST factors with a specific drug (thalidomide derivatives) inhibited the formation of CTCs and lung metastases, suggesting a potential therapeutic strategy to prevent cancer spread without affecting the growth of the original tumors.

Cancer has long been considered a genetic disease characterized by a myriad of mutations that drive cancer progression. Recent accumulating evidence indicates that the dysregulated metabolism in cancer cells is more than a hallmark of cancer but may be the underlying cause of the tumor. Most of the well-characterized oncogenes or tumor suppressor genes function to sustain the altered metabolic state in cancer.

Background: A large proportion of patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) relapse after drug discontinuation despite achieving a stable state of infliximab-induced clinical remission. Resuming the use of the same tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) inhibitors in patients who relapse following TNF-α inhibitor discontinuation was suggested as a treatment strategy. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate the efficacy and safety of infliximab retreatment in patients with IBD.

Particulate matter (PM) is believed to be related to cardiovascular and respiratory diseases. The skin is also known to be affected by PM exposure as a result of skin barrier dysfunction, cutaneous inflammation, and apoptotic cell death. Epidemiological studies have suggested that PM is related to pigment spots.

Adipocytes influence breast cancer behaviour via fatty acid release into the tumour microenvironment. Co-culturing human adipocytes and breast cancer cells increased CD36 expression, with fatty acid import into breast cancer cells. Genetic ablation of CD36 attenuates adipocyte-induced epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) and stemness.

Background: The high prevalence of chronic diseases has been an ongoing public concern. The psychological factors, including lack of social support and perceived lack of control, were found to be highly associated with an increased risk of the diseases. In fact, the effect of disease management programs (DMP) in patients diagnosed with chronic diseases were assessed in multiple studies to measure health-related quality of life (HR = QoL), which measured in the EuroQol 5-Dimension Questionnaire (EQ-5D) index score, also known as self-perceived health.

Glioblastoma is the most lethal brain tumor and its pathogenesis remains incompletely understood. KDM4C is a histone H3K9 demethylase that contributes to epigenetic regulation of both oncogene and tumor suppressor genes and is often overexpressed in human tumors, including glioblastoma. However, KDM4C's roles in glioblastoma and the underlying molecular mechanisms remain unclear.

E6 oncoprotein derived from high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV) drives the development of cervical cancer through p53 degradation. Because cervical cancer therapies to inactivate HPV or E6 protein are not available, alternative strategies are required. Here, we show that HPV-mediated nuclear export of human heterochromatin protein 1γ (HP1γ) reduces the stability of p53 through UBE2L3-mediated p53 polyubiquitination during cervical cancer progression.
