Cervical cancer (CC) is a significant global health issue and remains one of the leading causes of cancer-related mortality in women. Radiotherapy is a crucial treatment modality for CC; however, tumor heterogeneity and resistance to radiotherapy often result in suboptimal outcomes for some patients, including recurrence and metastasis. Periostin (POSTN), a matricellular protein within the tumor microenvironment, has been implicated in the promotion of tumor progression and treatment resistance, particularly through mechanisms such as epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT).

Article Synopsis
  • - This study focused on developing a new imaging-based method called single-cell spatial transcriptomics (iSCST) to analyze archived, formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissue samples from inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patients, which helps to preserve the spatial context of various cell types within the tissue.
  • - Researchers benchmarked three iSCST platforms by analyzing 57 FFPE mucosal biopsies from IBD patients and healthy controls, allowing for detailed cell analysis and gene expression profiling through a consistent data processing pipeline.
  • - A custom gene panel showed the best performance for detecting and quantifying different cell subsets, revealing significant findings related to inflammation and treatment responses in ulcerative colitis, which could enhance

Background: Radiotherapy or concurrent chemoradiotherapy is the standard treatment for patients with locally advanced or inoperable cervical squamous cell carcinoma and endocervical adenocarcinoma (CESC). However, treatment failure for CESC patients treated with radical radiotherapy still occurs due to local recurrence and distant metastasis. The previous prediction models were focused on all CESC patients, neglecting the prognostic differences under different treatment modalities.

  • Colitis caused by checkpoint inhibitors (CPI) is common and typically treated with steroids, but its mechanisms in patients who have used steroids or do not respond to them are not well understood.
  • Researchers analyzed biopsies and blood samples from mainly steroid-experienced CPI colitis patients using advanced techniques to identify contributing immune cell populations.
  • The study found increased levels of specific T cells linked to the colitis, and highlighted unique features of CPI colitis metabolism and potential targets for treatment, suggesting CD4 memory T cells and certain endothelial cells could be key in managing this disease.

Background: As one of the most common musculoskeletal ailments, chronic nonspecific low-back pain (CNLBP) causes persistent disability and substantial medical expenses. Epidemiological evidence shows that the incidence rate of CNLBP in young and middle-aged people who are demanded rapidly recovery and social contribution is rising. Recent guidelines indicate a reduced role for medicines in the management of CNLBP.

Adhesion G protein-coupled receptors (aGPCRs) constitute an evolutionarily ancient family of receptors that often undergo autoproteolysis to produce α and β subunits. A tethered agonism mediated by the 'Stachel sequence' of the β subunit has been proposed to have central roles in aGPCR activation. Here we present three cryo-electron microscopy structures of aGPCRs coupled to the G heterotrimer.

Background: Distant metastasis and local recurrence remain the major reasons of treatment failure in locally advanced nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). Therefore, exploring novel biomarkers for prognosis and sensitivity of radiotherapy in locally advanced NPC is crucial. This retrospective study evaluates the expression and prognostic value of aldehyde dehydrogenase 1B1 (ALDH1B1) for locally advanced NPC patients.

Paroxysmal kinesigenic dyskinesia (PKD) is the most common paroxysmal dyskinesia, characterized by recurrent episodes of involuntary movements provoked by sudden changes in movement. Proline-rich transmembrane protein 2 (PRRT2) has been identified as the major causative gene for PKD. Here, we report that PRRT2 deficiency facilitates the induction of cerebellar spreading depolarization (SD) and inhibition of cerebellar SD prevents the occurrence of dyskinetic movements.

Recent works on semantic segmentation witness significant performance improvement by utilizing global contextual information. In this paper, an efficient multi-granularity based semantic segmentation network (MGSeg) is proposed for real-time semantic segmentation, by modeling the latent relevance between multi-scale geometric details and high-level semantics for fine granularity segmentation. In particular, a light-weight backbone ResNet-18 is first adopted to produce the hierarchical features.

Colon cancer (CC) is considered one of the most common and lethal malignancies occurring both in male and female. Its widespread prevalence demonstrates the need for novel diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers for CC. Emerging evidence has shown that small nucleolar RNAs play critical roles in tumor development.

Radiation-induced enteritis is one of the most common complications in patients under radiotherapy at abdominal or pelvic cavity. Up to 50% of patients treated with pelvic radiotherapy has been reported radiation-induced acute enteritis, and half of them developed chronic enteritis. Overproduction of free radicals, activation of inflammatory pathways and vascular endothelial dysfunction were considered as the primary mechanisms of radiation-induced enteritis.

Purpose: Studies concerning tumor regression grade (TRG) after two-week course of radiotherapy (RT) are limited. We tried to assess associations of TRG and outcomes in patients with locally advanced rectal cancer (LARC) treated with preoperative two-week course of RT.

Methods: 356 consecutive LARC patients were retrospectively assessed.

To establish a risk scoring system for predicting locoregional recurrence (LRR) and explore the potential value of radiotherapy in T1 to T2 node-negative breast cancer patients treated with mastectomy. From January 2001 to February 2008, a total of 353 node-negative T1 to T2 breast cancer cases treated with mastectomy without adjuvant radiotherapy were retrospectively analyzed. Preliminary screening of the prognostic factors was accomplished by Kaplan-Meier univariate analysis, and survival curves between different groups were compared by log-rank test.

Article Synopsis
  • * Analyzed data from 80 HCC patients with tumor thrombus over eight years, finding significant factors for overall survival (OS) include gender, radiotherapy method, biologically effective dose (BED), and performance status.
  • * Results showed that higher BED correlated with better median OS (42 months vs. 19 months for low-BED), and survival rates decreased with more advanced types of tumor thrombi, suggesting the importance of tailored palliative radiotherapy.

This study aimed to evaluate the characteristics of the HVGGSSV peptide, exploring radiation-guided delivery in a mouse model of nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Mice with CNE-1 nasopharyngeal carcinoma were assigned to two different groups treated with Cy7-NHS and Cy7-HVGGSSV, respectively. Meanwhile, each mouse received a single dose of 3 Gy radiation.

To evaluate the effects and toxicity of radiotherapy (RT) combined with androgen deprivation (AD) for bone oligometastases after primary curative RT for prostate cancer (PCa).We retrospectively analyzed 30 consecutively treated PCa patients with bone oligometastases from April 2005 to July 2014. All patients underwent RT combined with AD for oligometastatic bones after curative RT for PCa.

Objective: To study the characteristics of the SiO2/R2O3 in non-zonal purple soil in the light of the difference between the high yield and low yield of Salvia miltiorrhiza.

Method: Both the high yield and low yield drugs developed from the same parental material (k1cy) were chosen in the ecology area in Zhongjiang county, Sichuan Province. By using the air-dried drugs as sample, quadrat sampling method was used to calculat the production.
