Background: Percutaneous dilatational tracheostomy (PDT), a bedside procedure in intensive care, enhances respiratory support for critically ill patients with benefits over traditional tracheostomy, such as improved safety, ease of use, cost-effectiveness, and operational efficiency by eliminating patient transfers to the operating room. It also minimizes complications including bleeding, infection, and inflammation. Despite decades of PDT evolution and device diversification, adaptations primarily cater to larger Western patients rather than smaller-statured Korean populations.

Background: Antithrombin is a small plasma glycoprotein synthesized in the liver that belongs to the serpin family of serine protease inhibitors and inactivates several enzymes in the coagulation pathway. It plays a leading major factor on coagulation pathway, therefore administration of antithrombin is essential to treat serious clinical conditions such as disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC). Despite the theoretical benefits of antithrombin supplementation, the optimal antithrombin activity for heparin efficacy and the benefits of antithrombin supplementation in various disease entities are not yet fully understood.

Background: The superficial veins are commonly used in conventional autogenous arteriovenous fistulas and the placement of prosthetic grafts. When they are unsuitable, however, the use of the deep veins (venae comitantes) is generally considered to be a reasonable alternative. This study conducted a comparative analysis of clinical outcomes for arteriovenous grafts between 2 groups based on the type of venous outflow: superficial veins or venae comitantes.

Patients who have undergone mechanical valve replacement require anticoagulation therapy with warfarin to prevent thromboembolism. However, administering warfarin to pregnant patients increases their risk of warfarin embryopathy or central nervous system disorders. Consequently, safer alternatives, such as heparin or low-molecular-weight heparin injection, are substituted for warfarin.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines the graft survival rates of full-thickness versus lamellar corneal xenotransplantation (XTP) using genetically engineered pigs in monkey recipients.
  • Results showed that lamellar XTP had significantly longer graft survival times compared to full-thickness XTP, with survival times of over 463 days versus 21 days, though not as high as previous lamellar studies.
  • The findings suggest that lamellar XTP avoids certain surgical complications associated with full-thickness XTP, but further research is needed to enhance graft survival rates and explore the impacts of different transgenic types.

Background: Exposure to cold temperature stimulates the sympathetic nervous system that activates β-adrenergic receptor signals in brown and beige adipocytes, leading to the induction of adaptive thermogenesis in mammals. Prominin-1 (PROM1) is a pentaspan transmembrane protein that is widely identified as a marker for stem cells, although the role of this protein as a regulator of many intracellular signaling cascades has been recently delineated. The main focus of the current study is to identify the previously unknown role of PROM1 in beige adipogenesis and adaptive thermogenesis.

  • Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a condition that can get worse in people with type 2 diabetes, and researchers want to understand how a gene called TCF7L2 affects this disease.
  • Scientists used special mice with modified genes to study what happens to their livers when they eat high-fat or high-carb diets.
  • Their findings showed that without TCF7L2, the mice's livers stored more fat, especially when they ate a lot of carbs, suggesting TCF7L2 helps control fat storage in the liver.

In Korea, herbal medicines (HMs) are primarily used to treat diseases. Patients with stroke are generally older and take several conventional medicines (CMs) to address other underlying diseases, which is known as polypharmacy. Therefore, there is a growing concern about hepatotoxicity and nephrotoxicity due to drug interactions between HMs and CMs.

Prominin-1, a lipid raft protein, is required for maintaining cancer stem cell properties in hepatocarcinoma cell lines, but its physiological roles in the liver have not been well studied. Here, we investigate the role of Prominin-1 in lipid rafts during liver regeneration and show that expression of Prominin-1 increases after 2/3 partial hepatectomy or CCl injection. Hepatocyte proliferation and liver regeneration are attenuated in liver-specific Prominin-1 knockout mice compared to wild-type mice.

Article Synopsis
  • Nocturia is a troublesome urinary symptom in men, and the Korean Urological Association (KUA) has created guidelines regarding the use of desmopressin, a synthetic version of vasopressin, for its treatment.
  • A systematic review was conducted to evaluate patient outcomes and to form recommendations, involving various expert groups such as the Korean Continence Society and KUA.
  • The guidelines recommend using desmopressin over placebo or alpha-blocker monotherapy for nocturia in men, and suggest its combination with alpha-blockers, but both recommendations are based on low certainty evidence.

Prominin-1 (Prom1) is a major cell surface marker of cancer stem cells, but its physiological functions in the liver have not been elucidated. We analyzed the levels of mRNA transcripts in serum-starved primary WT (Prom1 ) and KO (Prom1 ) mouse hepatocytes using RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) data, and found that CREB target genes were downregulated. This initial observation led us to determine that Prom1 deficiency inhibited cAMP response element-binding protein (CREB) activation and gluconeogenesis, but not cyclic AMP (cAMP) accumulation, in glucagon-, epinephrine-, or forskolin-treated liver tissues and primary hepatocytes, and mitigated glucagon-induced hyperglycemia.
