Objective: To evaluate the molluscicidal activity of a novel molluscicide pyriclobenzuron against in the mountain regions of Yunan Province, and test its toxicity to fish, so as to provide scientific evidence for the extensive application of this molluscicide in schistosomiasis-endemic foci of Yunan Province.

Methods: In the laboratory and snail-breeding field of Dali Prefecture, Yunnan Province, the molluscicidal activity of 5% wettable powder of pyriclobenzuron sulphate (25% PBU) against was assessed by using the immersion and spraying method, and the acute toxicity of 25% PBU to carp fries was tested, while 25% wettable powder of niclosamide ethanolamine salt (50% WPNES) served as a control.

Results: The 1-, 2- and 3-day 25% PBU LC50 and LC90 values were 0.

The aim of the present study is to explore the possibility to increase the efficacy of mebendazole (MBZ) against secondary cysts of Echinococcus granulosus harbored in mice by augmenting the solubility and bioavailability of the drug. Firstly, the saturated solubility of MBZ in nine kinds of oil was determined by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), and MBZ was found exhibiting the highest, secondary, and lowest solubility in oleic acid (OA), glycerol trioleate (GT), and soybean oil (SB), respectively. Secondly, MBZ-OA suspension, MBZ-GT suspension, MBZ-SB suspension, and MBZ suspended in 1 % tragacanth (MBZ-1 % tragacanth) were selected for further studies on pharmacokinetics and experimental therapy in mice.

The protective immunity elicited by ultraviolet-irradiated third-stage infective larvae of Necator americanus (UV-NaL3) and Ancylostoma caninum (UV-AcL3) was evaluated in laboratory mice (a non-permissive model) and hamsters (a permissive model). After optimizing the time of exposure to UV-irradiation, both oral and subcutaneous vaccination routes with UV-AcL3 in mice were explored. Oral vaccination was more effective at reducing the number of challenge AcL3 entering the lungs, whereas subcutaneous vaccination was more effective at blocking muscle entry.

Artemether, a derivative of artemisinin, is effectively used for the treatment of malaria without any clinically relevant resistance to date. Artemether has also been developed as an antischistosomal agent, exhibiting highest activity against immature parasites. Here, we employ a rodent model and investigate whether the proposed artemether treatment schedule to prevent schistosome-attributable morbidity might select for Plasmodium berghei resistance.
