Article Synopsis
  • Recent advancements in homochiral metal-organic framework (MOF) membranes show promise for chiral separations, but fabricating high-quality membranes remains challenging due to crystallization difficulties.
  • Mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) combine the benefits of MOFs and polymers, and new homochiral MOF-polymer MMMs have been developed for efficient chiral separation.
  • By modifying achiral MIL-53-NH nanocrystals with amino acids and incorporating them into a polymer matrix, these MMMs achieved a remarkable enantiomeric excess of up to 100% for separating racemic 1-phenylethanol.

Homochiral metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have gained much attention because of their chiral properties and disposition for chiral separation. However, the fabrication of high-quality homochiral MOF membranes remains challenging because of the difficulty in controlling growth of MOF membranes with chiral functionalities. A homochiral zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) membrane is reported for efficient chiral separation.
