Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to assess how common and what characteristics are associated with bifurcation of the facial nerve in the mastoid segment, using CT scans of temporal bones from a large number of cases.
  • Out of 970 reviewed cases, only 10 instances of facial nerve branching were found, resulting in a low incidence rate of 0.52%, mostly affecting individuals over 20 years old and predominantly on the left side.
  • The researchers concluded that while bifurcation is rare, understanding its occurrence is essential for surgical planning to prevent nerve damage and improve patient safety during otologic procedures.

Objectives: To examine the effects of distractor sounds presented to the contralateral ear on speech intelligibility in patients with listening difficulties without apparent peripheral pathology and in control participants.

Design: This study examined and analyzed 15 control participants (age range, 22 to 30 years) without any complaints of listening difficulties and 15 patients (age range, 15 to 33 years) diagnosed as having listening difficulties without apparent peripheral pathology in the outpatient clinic of the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, Tohoku University Hospital. Speech intelligibility for 50 Japanese monosyllables presented to the right ear was examined under the following three different conditions: "without contralateral sound," "with continuous white noise in the contralateral ear," and "with music stimuli in the contralateral ear.

Background: Systemic baricitinib and corticosteroids play important roles in treating severely and critically ill patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). However, the efficacy of the combination of baricitinib and corticosteroids compared to that of corticosteroid monotherapy in severely and critically ill hospitalized patients with COVID-19 remains unclear.

Methods: We analyzed severely and critically ill hospitalized patients with COVID-19 aged >18 years between January 1, 2020 and May 31, 2023, using a Japanese multicenter inpatient database.

Objectives: The clinical trial showed that sublobar resection was not inferior to lobectomy in terms of disease-free survival in patients with peripherally located non-small-cell lung cancer ≤2 cm. However, it is not clear whether sublobar resection is indicated for all types of c-stage IA lung cancer. The purpose of this study was to clarify whether sublobar resection is indicated for c-stage IA hypermetabolic lung cancer.

Article Synopsis
  • Vestibular paroxysmia is characterized by sudden and recurring episodes of vertigo, and in this case, it was caused by pressure on the vestibulocochlear nerve from the subarcuate artery.
  • A 46-year-old man experienced increasing vertigo and tinnitus over five years; treatment with carbamazepine was initially effective, but he had to stop due to a rash.
  • Surgery to relieve the nerve compression (microvascular decompression) successfully resolved his vertigo symptoms.

Cells establish the asymmetrical distribution of phospholipids and alter their distribution by phospholipid scrambling (PLS) to adapt to environmental changes. Here, we demonstrate that a protein complex, consisting of the ion channel Tmem63b and the thiamine transporter Slc19a2, induces PLS upon calcium (Ca) stimulation. Through revival screening using a CRISPR sgRNA library on high PLS cells, we identify Tmem63b as a PLS-inducing factor.

Article Synopsis
  • The study compares survival rates between two surgical procedures—segmentectomy and wedge resection—for patients with early-stage non-small cell lung cancer (cT1cN0M0).
  • A total of 91 patients were analyzed, showing no significant difference in overall survival after 5 years (67.7% for segmentectomy vs 52.0% for wedge resection), but a notably worse recurrence-free survival for the wedge resection group (46.9% vs 66.6%).
  • The findings suggest that while both surgeries have similar overall survival rates, segmentectomy may offer a better prognosis in terms of recurrence-free survival.

Stress induces global stabilization of the mRNA poly(A) tail (PAT) and the assembly of untranslated poly(A)-tailed mRNA into mRNPs that accumulate in stress granules (SGs). While the mechanism behind stress-induced global PAT stabilization has recently emerged, the biological significance of PAT stabilization under stress remains elusive. Here, we demonstrate that stress-induced PAT stabilization is a prerequisite for SG formation.
