The involvement of the mechanistic targets of rapamycin (mTOR) pathway in lipid metabolism has been recently elucidated. However, its specific role in the Meibomian gland, where lipid metabolism is significant, remains not fully understood. We investigated the role of mTOR signaling system in the lipogenesis and differentiation of human meibomian gland epithelial cells (HMGECs).

  • Steroid 5α-reductase (SRD5A) is vital for converting testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT), and its inhibitor dutasteride is used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia, but it can also negatively affect fish reproduction.
  • This study on zebrafish embryos shows that dutasteride exposure reduced levels of DHT, 17β-estradiol (E2), and vitellogenin (VTG), leading to downregulation of reproduction-related genes, indicating a complex relationship between androgens and estrogens.
  • The research suggests that the effects of dutasteride may not depend on typical hormonal pathways (and

We evaluated the liver transplantation (LT) criteria in acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF), incorporating an urgent living-donor LT (LDLT) program. Critically ill patients with a Chronic Liver Failure Consortium (CLIF-C) ACLF score (CLIF-C_ACLF_score) ≥65, previously considered unsuitable for LT, were included to explore the excess mortality threshold of the CLIF-C_ACLF_score (CLIF-C_ACLF_score_threshold). We followed 854 consecutive patients with ACLF (276 ACLF grade 2 and 215 ACLF grade 3) over 10 years among 4432 LT recipients between 2008 and 2019.

To determine the differences in the effects of intense pulsed light (IPL) treatment when including the upper and lower lid or lateral canthus area in patients with meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD). Patients who underwent three IPL treatment sessions at 3-week intervals were divided into three groups according to the treatment sites: group A, lower lid; group B, upper and lower lids; and group C, lower lid and lateral canthal area. Before and after the IPL treatment sessions, we obtained the lid abnormality score (LAS), meibum expressibility (ME), meibum quality (MQ), lipid layer thickness (LLT), type I Schirmer test (ST), tear break-up time (TBUT) test, corneal fluorescein staining scores (CFSs), and Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI).

: Transurethral urologic surgeries frequently lead to hypothermia due to bladder irrigation. Prewarming in the preoperative holding area can reduce the risk of hypothermia but disrupts surgical workflow, preventing it from being of practical use. This study explored whether early intraoperative warming during induction of anesthesia, known as peri-induction warming, using a forced-air warming device combined with warmed intravenous fluid could prevent intraoperative hypothermia.

Importance: Taking ω-3 supplements has been associated with a reduction in symptoms of dry eye disease (DED) associated with meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD). However, a recent relatively large clinical trial concluded that treating DED with ω-3 consumption was ineffective, potentially warranting additional investigations.

Objectives: To investigate the effect of re-esterified triglyceride (rTG) ω-3 fatty acid supplementation on DED associated with MGD.

This study quantifies health outcome disparities in invasive Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infections by leveraging a novel artificial intelligence (AI) fairness algorithm, the Fairness-Aware Causal paThs (FACTS) decomposition, and applying it to real-world electronic health record (EHR) data. We spatiotemporally linked 9 years of EHRs from a large healthcare provider in Florida, USA, with contextual social determinants of health (SDoH). We first created a causal structure graph connecting SDoH with individual clinical measurements before/upon diagnosis of invasive MRSA infection, treatments, side effects, and outcomes; then, we applied FACTS to quantify outcome potential disparities of different causal pathways including SDoH, clinical and demographic variables.

The habitability of Europa is a property within a system, which is driven by a multitude of physical and chemical processes and is defined by many interdependent parameters, so that its full characterization requires collaborative investigation. To explore Europa as an integrated system to yield a complete picture of its habitability, the Europa Clipper mission has three primary science objectives: (1) characterize the ice shell and ocean including their heterogeneity, properties, and the nature of surface-ice-ocean exchange; (2) characterize Europa's composition including any non-ice materials on the surface and in the atmosphere, and any carbon-containing compounds; and (3) characterize Europa's geology including surface features and localities of high science interest. The mission will also address several cross-cutting science topics including the search for any current or recent activity in the form of thermal anomalies and plumes, performing geodetic and radiation measurements, and assessing high-resolution, co-located observations at select sites to provide reconnaissance for a potential future landed mission.
