Article Synopsis
  • Lymphocyte-rich hepatocellular carcinoma (LR-HCC) is a rare subtype of liver cancer characterized by an immune-rich environment and the presence of tertiary lymphoid structures (TLS), which are important for cancer prognosis.
  • A study analyzed data from 191 liver cancer cases to compare LR-HCC with conventional hepatocellular carcinoma (C-HCC) and found that LR-HCC had larger tumors, higher grades, and more immune cell activity, leading to significantly better overall and recurrence-free survival rates.
  • The research highlights that LR-HCC is distinct from C-HCC at both clinical and molecular levels, suggesting that the presence of secondary follicles in tumors could serve as a valuable prognostic indicator for both types of cancer.

Transfer learning has attracted considerable attention in medical image analysis because of the limited number of annotated 3-D medical datasets available for training data-driven deep learning models in the real world. We propose Medical Transformer, a novel transfer learning framework that effectively models 3-D volumetric images as a sequence of 2-D image slices. To improve the high-level representation in 3-D-form empowering spatial relations, we use a multiview approach that leverages information from three planes of the 3-D volume, while providing parameter-efficient training.

Background: Cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) in the tumor microenvironment (TME) contribute to an impaired functionality of natural killer (NK) cells that have emerged as a promising therapeutic modality. The interaction between CAFs and NK cells within the TME exerts major inhibitory effects on immune responses, indicating CAF-targeted therapies as potential targets for effective NK-mediated cancer killing.

Methods: To overcome CAF-induced NK dysfunction, we selected an antifibrotic drug, nintedanib, for synergistic therapeutic combination.
