Intracranial adenoid cystic carcinoma--a case report.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is a relatively common malignant neoplasm which occurs in the head and neck region, particularly in the salivary glands. It is a slow growing, locally aggressive neoplasm with a unique feature of perineural spread. Intracranial extension can occur by direct extension, hematogenous metastases or by perineural spread.

Gastrointestinal hemorrhage in hepatocellular carcinoma: management with transheptic arterioembolization.

Gastrointestinal hemorrhage in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma is common and a major contributor to mortality. These patients tend to have a very poor prognosis. This report describes five such cases in which gastrointestinal bleeding was one of the presenting problems and required urgent management.

Variation in the isocentre of a Philips linear accelerator (SL-20) used for stereotactic radiosurgery/stereotactic radiotherapy.

Stereotactic irradiation, either in the form of stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) or stereotactic radiotherapy (SRT) of brain lesions requires high precision and submillimetre accuracy in the isocentre, the main determinants being gantry and couch rotations. It is thus necessary to evaluate the isocentre variation due to gantry and couch rotations in the particular setup for SRS/SRT. This paper describes variation in the isocentre of a Philips (now Elekta) SL-20 linear accelerator modified for adapting a couch-mounted radiosurgery system.

Paclitaxel-epirubicin in advanced breast cancer.

Breast cancer remains a major cause of morbidity and early death in women worldwide. Despite the responsiveness of advanced breast cancer to a number of chemotherapeutic and hormonal agents, long term outcome remains poor. The introduction of paclitaxel with a novel mechanism of action has kindled a ray of hope.

Medulloblastoma--a retrospective analysis.

A retrospective review of 45 patients was undertaken at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences to assess the outcome and prognostic factors for these patients who received post operative radiotherapy with or without chemotherapy for medulloblastoma. The median age at diagnosis was 11 years, with 34 males and 11 female patients. Thirty four tumours were confined to midline structures, and 11 were localised to one cerebellar hemisphere or involved midline and lateral structures.

A study of concurrent radiochemotherapy with paclitaxel in glioblastoma multiforme.

Despite advances in neurosurgery and radiotherapy, the prognosis of patients with glioblastoma multiforme remains poor. Reports in the literature about the radiosensitizing properties of paclitaxel stimulated the authors to conduct a study using paclitaxel concurrently with radiation in a group of 18 patients who had residual disease postoperatively. Paclitaxel was delivered weekly as an intravenous infusion in a dose of 60 mg/m2 along with radiation to the primary lesion.

Volume localized in vivo proton MR spectroscopy of breast carcinoma: variation of water-fat ratio in patients receiving chemotherapy.

Results are reported on in vivo volume localized proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) of patients (n = 44) suffering from carcinoma of the breast, using a bilateral breast surface coil. Localized proton MR spectra of the unaffected contralateral breast of these patients are dominated by resonances arising from fat and are similar to the breast tissue from normal volunteers (controls, n = 13), while in the malignant breast tissues the water resonance dominates. On the other hand, the water suppressed proton MR spectra of malignant breast tissue reveal several metabolites of low concentration including the choline peak around 3.

Radiation therapy in pseudotumour haemarthrosis.

Total or partial deficiency of factor VIII and IX in the coagulation cascade leads to haemophilia. Haemophilia affecting weight-bearing joints gives a 'pseudotumour' or haemarthrosis-like condition. Surgery and cryoprecipitate infusions have been the treatment for this condition.

Human leucocytic antigens (HLA) in breast cancer.

HLA frequencies of fifty (50) female breast cancer patients were compared with 200 age matched female controls. A total of 20 HLA-A locus, 35 HLA-B locus and 8 HLA-C locus antigens were studied. The HLA-A2, A11, Aw19 and A30; HLA-B8, B14 and HLA Cw6 were found significantly higher than the controls.

Iron overload augments 7,12-dimethylbenz(a)anthracene-initiated and 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate-promoted skin tumorigenesis.

Reactive oxygen species and free radicals have been implicated in the multistep cutaneous chemical carcinogenesis. Much of the experimental evidence in this regard is indirect and is based on observations that prooxidant status usually enhances and antioxidant treatments generally inhibit tumor yield. Iron overload is known to enhance peroxidative damage and cause oxidative stress.

Case report: giant cell tumour of metacarpals: report of three cases.

Giant cell tumour of the metacarpal bone is rare. We have encountered three cases during the last 30 years. Surgical treatment is difficult in such a critical site and is always associated with functional deformities and poor cosmesis.

Primary Hodgkin's disease of small intestine: a report of two cases.

Two patients with primary Hodgkin's disease of the small intestine are reported because of rarity of this condition. Both patients presented with primary intestinal symptoms and were diagnosed after surgical resection. The modalities of treatment and favorable long term survival are presented.

Optimum radiation technique for retinoblastoma in conserved eyes.

The study evaluated 121 consecutive unoperated cases of retinoblastoma in children. They received radiation as the primary treatment for their ocular disease. The stage grouping was done according to Reese classification.
