Article Synopsis
  • A study conducted at a French University hospital examined the smoking habits of COVID-19 patients, both inpatients and outpatients, to determine any potential link between smoking and severity of symptoms.
  • Among the inpatient group (340 patients), only 4.1% were daily smokers, while the outpatient group (139 patients) had a slightly higher rate of 6.1%. These rates were significantly lower than those found in the general French population.
  • Furthermore, the research indicated that among the severe cases, including patients who died or were transferred to intensive care, the percentage of daily smokers was minimal, suggesting that smoking might not be a risk factor for severe COVID-19 outcomes.

Background: Early sepsis diagnosis has emerged as one of the main challenges in the emergency room. Measurement of sepsis biomarkers is largely used in current practice to improve the diagnosis accuracy. Monocyte distribution width (MDW) is a recent new sepsis biomarker, available as part of the complete blood count with differential.

Importance: An international task force recently redefined the concept of sepsis. This task force recommended the use of the quick Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (qSOFA) score instead of systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) criteria to identify patients at high risk of mortality. However, these new criteria have not been prospectively validated in some settings, and their added value in the emergency department remains unknown.

Background: Easy to use point of care assays for D-Dimers measurement in whole blood from patients with clinical suspicion of venous thromboembolism (VTE) will facilitate the diagnostic strategy in the Emergency Department (ED) setting. We prospectively evaluated the diagnostic performance of the point-of-care mLabs® Whole Blood D-Dimers test and we compared it with the Vidas® D-Dimers assay.

Methods: As part of the diagnostic algorithm applied in patients with clinical suspicion of VTE, the VIDAS® D-Dimers Test was prescribed by the emergency physician in charge.

Article Synopsis
  • This study aimed to investigate how often alternative diagnoses are found using low-dose unenhanced CT scans in emergency department patients suspected of having uncomplicated renal colic.
  • It involved screening 178 patients over six months, wherein 155 received CT scans; 76% of these confirmed renal colic, but 6% revealed other medical issues, with half requiring hospitalization.
  • The findings suggest that systematic use of this imaging method could improve diagnosis accuracy, supporting the need for further research with controlled trials.
