Nesfatin-1, the cleavage product of nucleobindin-2, is an anorexigenic peptide and major regulator of energy homeostasis. Beyond reducing food intake and increasing energy expenditure, it is also involved in regulating the stress response. Interaction of nucleobindin-2/nesfatin-1 and glucose homeostasis has been observed and recent findings suggest a link between the action of the antidiabetic drug metformin and the nesfatinergic system.

While the leptin receptor has been implicated in the transport process, recent evidence has suggested an additional role of LRP2 (megalin). To evaluate the function of LRP2 for leptin transport across the blood-brain barrier (BBB), we developed a novel leptin-luciferase fusion protein (pLG), which stimulated leptin signaling and was transported in an in vitro BBB model based on porcine endothelial cells.

As part of the "omics" technologies in the life sciences, metabolomics is becoming increasingly important. In untargeted metabolomics, unambiguous metabolite identification and the inevitable coverage bias that comes with the selection of analytical conditions present major challenges. Reliable compound annotation is essential for translating metabolomics data into meaningful biological information.
